Wrackleford House
« on: Thursday 02 April 09 11:11 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any details of the history of Wrackleford House near Dorchester?

I have gleaned so far that the house was built by the Taunton family (to be confirmed).  It was leased/sold to Robert Pattison in the early to mid 1800s.  A Taunton daughter mentioned an interest in the lease of  the "Mansion house and lands situate at Wrackleford in the Parish of Stratton in the County of Dorset in the occupation of Robert Pattison Esquire..." in her will of 1857.
It was subsequently sold to the Pope family (of brewing fame) who still own the property.

There are a few details about the house here but, if you contact the hosts, they may know more:

Richard,

Thanks, I have dropped them a line.  Worth a try.  If all else fails it will have to be a search at the DHC - when funds permit.

Yours aye

Hi Stephen

There should be something in Hutchins about the house, sorry can't remember where you are!? Most of the bigger libraries in Dorset have copies of all of them... I know they've got copies of the whole set in Blandford Library.. can't go tomorrow as it is closed but have to go up town on Thursday so can go and take a look for you?

Is there anything in particular you are after?

Trying to figure out the Davis family of Winterborne Abbas and where they originated (before about 1780)

Jen

Thank you.  I'm in Hampshire with no real prospect of heading towards Dorset for the foreseeable future. :(

My main area of interest is when and by whom was it built - was it actually built by some of my forebears, the Taunton family?  I know Robert Pattison was in residence from around 1820.

Any light you can shed would be most gratefully received.

Your aye

If it's not in Hutchins I'll be amazed, he and the later editors covered the 'big houses' extensively, I'll photocopy it which will hopefully be good enough to scan and mail to you.

Have you found the Wrackleford Estate website? http://www.wrackleford.co.uk/contact.asp might be worth mailing them as well?

I have been mulling it as another course of action.  I'll give my wording some thought so it does not get deleted at first glance - they do have a business to run.
