My great gran was a Bickerdyke born not far away from me.  Look up on the Ancestry site and in the search section - put in Howard Bickerdyke born Leeds 1900 + or - 5 years.  You will find the Sutcliffe Hotel in Burley belonging to great uncle Howard and it may also lead you to Margaret Creek who has all our male relatives.  She knows much more than me - but I can tell you about part of the female side and their spouses.

Hi Suentimb,
Just a note to say that your Dad served me many a pint back in the late 1970's, early 1980's
You will remember Jack (whistling Window cleaner & barman) Kelly.
What a character he was!

I have a Mary Ann Bickerdyke, age 20, born Leeds, popping up in the 1881 census with with my family.  It states she is a 'step daughter' to Joseph Milner.
Mary Ann's mother is Rose Hannah nee Armitage.  Rose I believed married twice, 1st to John Campbell, 2nd Joseph Milner.

Not sure whether it's Mary Ann's married name or her mother Rose married a Bickerdyke.
I think Mary Ann's maiden surname is Campbell and she was born after the 1861 census.

my ggg-grandmother Ellen Bickerdike was born c 1808 in Sherburn-in-Elmet.

She married Wiiliam Hayes in Sherburn in 1830, he was born c 1800 in Kippax

I have a copy of the marriage entry but there is no mention of father for either Ellen of William.
....

an update to the details I posted on my gtgtgt-grandmother Ellen Bickerdike - I recently double checked the places of birth for her on the census returns :

1841 : Living in Sherburn-in-Elmet, place of birth 'in county'
1851 : pob Skelton, Yorkshire, England
1861 : pob Sherburn, Yorkshire, England
1871 : pob Skelton, Yorkshire, England

In 1871 Ellen is a widow & head of household, so I suspect that may be her actual place of birth.  There seems to be several places named Skelton in Yorkshire .. would the one near York be closest, and a likely location for Ellen's family ?

Looking for any information on a Harry Bickerdike that left England mid to late 1800's to go to Canada, settling in Victoria, B.C.
Looking for information on my my mother's maiden name Bickerdike, daughter of Harry I. Bickerdike, son of Harry Bickerdike who came over to Victoria, B.C. Canada from England perhaps late or mid 1800's.

Drop me a message

My great Grandmother was Ida Bickerdike (1895 - 1988) from Yorkshire, and my Great Aunt her daughter is still alive and well - I do have a family tree if you wish - only back to William Bickerdike 1822 but I am not following that Lineage too much. My grandmothers sister went to Canada and used to send me Canadian dollars, which I still have

Phil
