Bickerdike Family
« on: Thursday 02 April 09 11:01 BST (UK) »
Good morning all...
I'm new to the forum but not to family history, I have been researching my Bickerdike family for the past ten years.
My oldest ancestor is William BICKERDIKE b 1801 married to Elizabeth B(R)IGGS and lived in Brayshaw Fold, Low Moor, Bradford from at least 1839. Most Bickerdikes were in the Leeds andeast of Leeds area very few were in Bradford
Two of his sons moved to Wortley in Leeds to work in the iron foundry there where I think they helped populate the area though William Jnr moved to Churwell to get some fresh air as a market gardener at Lincroft Farm. One of his sons, Early Bickerdike, moved to Morley where he and his wife had three children one of which was my grandfather Amos William Bickerdike. The family moved into Batley where Amos married Nelly Clayton. They had two sons John and my father Allan, my father was a merchant seaman and later a pub landlord in Ravensthorpe, Dewsbury.
I was born in Thornhill Lees but have lived most of my life in Ravensthorpe.

I'd love to hear from any Bickerdike researchers as we are few and far between.

Welcome to RootsChat suentimb,
I'm not a Bikerdike researcher but I know of a site that might be of interest

http://www.sblha.com/sblha.html

The site includes BMDs MIs etc from the Low Moor area many are in the process of transcription. I did notice some Briggs on there.
Have you placed your names in the Surname Interests tables ?

My Bickerdike's are from Leeds - traced them back to 1606 - originally from Harewood and Collingham.

my ggg-grandmother Ellen Bickerdike was born c 1808 in Sherburn-in-Elmet.

She married Wiiliam Hayes in Sherburn in 1830, he was born c 1800 in Kippax

I have a copy of the marriage entry but there is no mention of father for either Ellen of William.

Has anyone come across the Bikerdike family from Langtoft near Driffield in Yorkshire?
There were a good few of them there for quiet a while before they moved to the Hunslet/ Bingley area of Leeds just before 1900.
I would be more than greatful for help with this family.

Hi there,

I have ancestors with the surname Bickerdike, I have traced so far
to a Richard Bickerdike, born 1806 in Yorkshire. He married
an Elizabeth Milner, their son Joseph married into my Caley family.
Robert was an East India Merchant. Joseph was a Managing Chemist.
