Hello and welcome to Rootschat,

Not much to find here and you perhaps have this information.

Family Search has Jane's birth 1868 Co Down and Valentine's birth 1866 Waringstown, Co Down.  There are also a few entries for Valentine Sefton - Antrim and Down. Griffiths Valuation has entries for Valentine snr and jnr.
There is mention of the family on here:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/SURNAMES/F/FinlayFinley.htm Donaghcloney parish. (Waringstown).
I cannot see the family in English census nor a birth for Sarah in Lincolnshire  ???

Did the family emigrate from England?

best wishes
heywood

thx for replying heywood :) ...yes they left england from gravesend london in 1874 aboard the zealandia and came to new zealand...they had another daughter esther zealandia sefton aboard the ship and 3 more children in nz.william john, henry and robert...i have all the info you suggested already suspect the valentine snr and valentine jnr could possibly be related to my william(brother/uncle/cousin???)as have tenancy agreements for both william and valentine snr next to each other in tullylish ireland in 1864.william then met mary finlay and they married in the tullylish church of ireland in 1866...its possible sarah wasnt born in lincolnshire as that info has just been given by a family member who could be wrong...i have a family listed in the 1841 census that im thinking ??? may be williams parents as he was born 1840 and would of been 1 year old in 1841...(would love to confirm this)...

Robert Sefton 30 Ag Lab all born county
Frances Sefton 30
Margaret Sefton 7
Ester Sefton 5
Thomas Sefton3
William Sefton 1

The family you mention was in Lancashire.  SEFTON is a Lancs name - very rare in Lincs.
Don't cry because its over. Smile because it happened.

in Chorley Lancashire

I'll look for them in further censuses

they are here but no William. There are a couple of deaths in for William Sefton in 1847 and 1848.

I would think that the Seftons are from Co Down too and that the family member has mixed up the Lincolnshire/Lancashire counties.
The name Valentine seems to be such a strong link.
Are there no Parish records for Tullylish?
It may well be that there is a William and Valentine snr with sons William and Valentine jnr?

I have just looked up the marriage on Family Search pilot and then realised you already have it in 1866. Have you got the certificate? Does it have the fathers' names on it?

on the ships passenger list it says they originated from down county if thats any help? i have absolutely no knowledge of england regions(sad aye hahaha) so it is possible that its lancashire then i guess ???...my william died in nz in 1917 and no i dont have the marriage cert just found it on a geneolgy site cant remember where...i know for sure that he met and married mary in tullylish(have no idea how to search parish records??) and then they had valentine and sarah in warringston cork ireland followed by jane(thought was born lincolnshire but maybe not??) then esther zealandia born at sea aboard the zealandia and 3 children born in New Zealand william john, henry and robert...sarah died in NZ aged 14,Henry died in France WW1 in 1917 aged 38 and robert died in NZ in 1903 aged 21.the only reason i thought that family may be his parents, is because  the william was listed as being 1 year old, which he would of been in 1841, and there was a sister called ester and william named one of his daughters that plus the fathers name was robert and william named a son robert as well...im really just clutching at straws now :-\

Hello Michelle,

County Down is in Ireland not England. Tullylish, Waringstown are both areas of County Down so perhaps a moderator will transfer this to the right board for you.
I would suggest that you 'google' a bit and look for the area and look at a couple of maps and that may give you a better idea.

These sites may help you:
http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_family_search_form.php - Griffiths Valuation

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp - Family Search

Family Search Pilot gives you the marriage reference which you already have for 1866 and you could send for that certificate if you needed it - that should contain the fathers' names of William and Mary.

http://www.groireland.ie/  - Irish records.

It looks as though William's father is not Valentine. This site has a William b 1857, son of Valentine - marrying in Canada.
http://www.igp-web.com/down/down_canadians.htm

It is possible I suppose that a father and son (both Valentines) had sons William but I would say that the families are definitely linked because of the name Valentine. (You thought though -and I did at first- that the Lancashire family were linked through Ester  ;D ).
