Joslin in G Waltham and Joslin/Marthams/Wallis in Heybridge

Hi

Could anyone help me with the following people please?

I'd like to confirm the birth of:

John JOSLIN abt 1747 of Great Waltham (siblings may be - William, Sarah, Joseph, Richard all born between 1748 and 1755)

Sarah MARTHAMS abt 1761 of either Heybridge or Maldon.



Also, if anyone can find the marriage of Thomas JOSLIN to Ann WALLIS, 12 May 1815, possibly in Heybridge, could you say whether WALLIS is Ann's maiden name or a name from a previous marriage?

Thanks so much for the MARTHAMS information. I particularly love the fact that they had a daughter called Happy 

William and Margaret are my husband's GGGGG-Grandparents, if there are any other MARTHAM researchers out there.

Marthams, William, was buried at St Peters, November the 12th


No indication of age, so can't tell if this was father or son.

I have tried the Joslin website, but the problem is that I have found two references for John JOSLIN's parentage, and Peter Joslin's site sadly doesn't provide any answers.

One researcher has found a John JOSLIN born to a John JOSLIN and Margaret GOWERS in Great Waltham and another has found a John JOSLIN born to a James JOSLIN and Mary (?) in the Little Totham area.

Both of these JOSLINs marry Sarah Martham and go on to have Thomas JOSLIN in Heybridge in 1788 according to their trees 

I've got definite links that go back to Thomas, but, as always, it's those who he's descended from that's causing me grief. I've learned not to rely on other people's research too much and was just wondering if I could find any information that would help me firm up on which John JOSLIN is the right John JOSLIN.

Hello Sally,

I have MATHAMS/MATTHAMS/MATTHEMS and I think there may be the occasional MARTHAMS in Great Waltham, Maldon, Writtle and many of the other surrounding villages although I'm not sure about Heybridge. Also have JOSLINS/JOSLYNS in Great and Little Waltham and possibly a JOSCELYN (Sarah) in Black Notley.

If it would help, I also have some GW parish records to hand.

I've got a tree, sent to me a few years back with one set of parents for him, but I've become a bit skeptical about the parents they've attached to him, hence my eventual call for help.

Any info on the Marthams is also welcome.

Hello Sally,

There is definitely an entry in the Great Waltham baptism register for John Joslin, son of John and Margaret Joslin baptised August 1748. The date looks like Aug 28th, but it is a bit tricky to read. There is also a baptism for a William Joslin of the same parents baptised 15 January 1748. No dates of birth are given for either child.

Does this help at all?

Curiously, there is also a marriage on IGI (unfortunately a submitted entry) for John Joslen and Margaret Gowers at Great Leighs Essex on 5 May 1748. If this date is correct, then the marriage took place after the baptism of William but before the baptism of John which is a bit odd.

Unfortunately I can only get my hands on the marriage banns for Great Waltham as far back as 1767, so I can't tell the actual date of their marriage from that.

I will try and spend some time in the next few days going through my Matthams and Joslin names to see if there is anything that looks like it might tie in with what you have? In the meantime, if there is anything else you think might pop up in the Great Waltham records, let me know.

Hi Jan,

Yes, the Joslin/Gowers marriage is the only that's been sent to me. However, I'm unsure about them because the geography doesn't fit properly, rather like the dates.

It's possible that it's actually the villages of Great/Little Totham where John Joslin was born as opposed to Great Waltham as I have a death for John Joslin in 1828 in Great Totham and Sarah (nee Marthams) is also possibly buried there in 1814, but I've no real way of knowing.

If only the Joslin name wasn't SO popular...... )
