Peppard/Pepper, Wicklow

I've since discovered that he was living in Baltinglass in the late 1890's but is not on the 1901 Census. He is not recorded in the death records so where could he have gone? His son, also John, was living in Dublin in 1901.

Rory I see on the bottom of your mail that you are also looking at Talbot name I would be interested in getting to chat to you about this name also

Now  PEPPER name is still in Wicklow in 1918 when the son of George Pepper Albert married a lass at Dunganstown Parish in 1918  they then have a child born in Dublin. named Albert in 1919
It appears the name George Pepper floats around often in the Wicklow area and I have several marriages of Pepper.

I fail to see what the problem would be if they are not in Baltinglass and are in Dublin one seems to be close to the other when you are driving within the area.

Hi there!  Does anyone have any information on or connection to a Matthew Peppard/Pepper, born county Wicklow about 1824?  He married Honora Smullen in January 1850.  They had a son James, and emigrated to Australia on the "Marshall Bennett" in 1851.  Their daughter Mary was my great grandmother.

On another site I had a connection which outlined Matthew's family. He was a goldminer when he emigrated to Oz. Himself and his wife Honora (b 1828) had 8 known children: James (1850), Mary (1854 - 15 Jul 1933), Ellen (1856), Thomas (1856 - 1856), Margaret (1858), William (1863) and Letitia (1868 - 15 Aug 1888). James was the only child born in Wicklow, the rest were all born in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. As far as I can determine John's parents were John Pepper/Peppard (b.1800 Rathdrum, Wicklow - d. abt 1889 Dublin) and Elizabeth Sharpe (b. 02 Dec 1807 Knocklishen, Rathvilly, Co Carlow - d. Bet. Apr - Jun 1880 Dublin), they married in Rathdrum, Co Wicklow on 12 May 1822. Their other children were:
John (1838 Garrettstown, Rahill, Rathvilly, Co Carlow- 21 Nov 1926 31.1 Old Kilmainham, Usher's Quay, Dublin (my GGgrandfather)
Joseph (b. abt 1840 Baltinglass, Co Wicklow)
George (b. abt 1840 Baltinglass, Co Wicklow)
Jane ((b. abt 1855 Baltinglass, Co Wicklow - d. after 1876)

My gg grandmother was Mary E. Pepper, born 1819 in Avoca, Wicklow.  Another researcher has told me that her father was Matthew Pepper, but I have no proof of that.  Perhaps your Matthew Pepper could have been her brother.  What do you think?

My gg grandmother married Benjamin Henry Chapman [b. 1820 in Ballyloughlin, Wicklow] and they emigrated to Canada in about 1843-4.  Later they moved on and settled in Wisconsin, USA.

Hi Erato,

Very hard to say without verification, which I haven't been able to find on any of the Irish BMD on-line databases.  Going by the information from RoryT, it is possible that John Pepper & Elizabeth Sharpe had another daughter.  Their marriage was in 1822, my Matthew was born about 1825 and the next child, John, isn't born until 1838  -  quite a gap.

RoryT  -  do you still have the details of that previous connection you mentioned?

I have looked through my records for the source of the info but I think it was on a previous hard-drive that crashed and I had only the paper copies left. Erato had posted to me previously regarding his ancestor Mary who was a daughter of Matthew as far as I can remember.  John and Elizabeth Sharp info was gotten from the IGI and I vertified the info from the Parish Records a couple of years ago.  I wish I could offer you more but it is very difficult to access records for the Peppards around Wicklow/Carlow during that time and to clearly identify who is who.  There are a good few around the Rathdrum area which is close enough to Baltinglass on the Carlow/Wicklow border from where my GGGrandad came from (John and Harriette Sophia Jones).

Well, I think we've gotten a bit mixed up, unfortunately.  Luckily for me, though, I have today found the death certificate for my Matthew Peppard (married to Honora Smullen).  He died 24 Oct 1902 in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia.  However, the certificate list his parents as  Matthew Peppard (Labourer) and Mary, formerly Jenkinson.  He is listed as 79 when he died, so that makes his birth somewhere around 1823.  So I guess there is still the possibility, Erato, that your Mary fits in here, with a brother/father named Matthew.

Yes, Jenkinson was the name I was given for my Mary Pepper's mother.  As I said, I have no evidence that she actually was the daughter of Matthew Pepper and Mary [Ellen?] Jenkinson.  But it looks like there might be a link there between your ancestor and mine.
