By the way, Holstein House-I searched in Melbourne Argus, and found that in 1915, it was the home of the speaker of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, Francis Conway Stone, from Inniskillen, Ireland.

This is the entry: Argus, Tuesday 22 June 1915, page 1
MASON. - On the 19th June, at his residence, "Holstein
House," 50 Murphy Street, South Yarra, Hon. Francis Conway, beloved husband of H.Emelie, and fourth son of John and Anne Conway Mason, Inniskillen, County Fermanagh, Ireland, in his 72nd year. R.I.P.

So Holstein House, the former home of John Stone and and his family was sold to another Irish man and a one in politics as well!

Robyn kindly gave a link for indexes of Table Talk (see post titled "Table Talk/STONE family"  so I had a look.  There were three entries, each of which gave information only with the surname so impossible to connect them.  One was an ad for  Miss Stone who runs a hair removal clinic!!

judb,

Yes I don't think our Eugenia would have done that do you? The database was fine but I notice that you have to pay for information about a surname which is a bit hit and miss. I also notice, from your comments,  that the magazine does not tells us anything about Eugenia herself or the Stone family in general.

No Tom, it doesn't say anything about the journalists.  There are some twee articles about social events and weddings written in the first person but no by-line at all.

I had a look at a few issues and they were wonderful sources of information about the upper classes (or those who saw themselves as so) in Melbourne over the period.  It would be a wonderful resource if it is ever fully indexed.

Luckily the index that Robyn linked to gives the page and date ref so it didn't cost me anything to look at the film copies.  There is a full set at the National Library.  I'm sure there would be a PhD in it for someone.

Judb & Richard:

Holstein House, home of Stone family in 1914:

I have two photographs, dated around World War 1, with Holstein House circled, which I am sure will be of interest to other rootschatters on the Australian site.

Holstein House was in South Yarra, Melbourne on Murphy Street; so can anyone tell me the name of the church with the spire, whether they recognise any other building at all? What is the flat piece of land in the foreground? Is that a pylon for a tram car route in left foreground? Holstein House looks to be quite a large property but then so were many of the other houses in the photograph.
