Newbie 1st Post - Dover/Folkestone Parish help

This is my first post and I am a relative newcomer to researching my family tree. I have had reasonable success for the periods covered by existing family knowledge and periods covered by the UK census but am stumbling on certain family links beyond this period.

I have not had any luck using IGI for the TUTT family. Is there any "on-line" searchable access to Kent Parish records available? ( I cannot find anything on Ancestry)

For example I have come to an abrupt stop for the TUTT family around the Dover/Folkestone area.

I have an Edmund Thomas (abt 1819-1860) TUTT married to Caroline Bromley PAGE (Elham, Kent, 1847 A/M/J Vol 5 Page 232). Next step is obtaining this certificate. 

Any tips/advice appreciated.

Hi Pete, Welcome to rootschat.

Sorry i can't help you directly with your TUTTs or Kent records but someone will come who knows about this.

Do you know how to order the marraige cert?   if not, one of us can help. That cert will take you back a generation as it will tell you both the bride's and groom's fathers' names and occupations.

Be careful though... family history is very addictive

Pete , another idea... have you cjecked out "Your Surname Interests" the link to which is at the bottom of this page?   

You may find someone else researching your lot... and add your names there also.

Is there any way that marriage (and birth/death) certs can be "viewed" at local registry offices etc. or do they have to be purchased in order to gain the details of the parents?

I agree it is very addictive.

Pete, as far as I am aware the certs must be purchased--- awful isn't it... I could spend a fortune on them but most of us work out a priority list and try to stick to it

Sometimes one can work using census info to avoid buying some certs... and also freebmd can be helpful using cross checking.

Maybe you could get a job in an RO

Charlotte is spot on with her advice. Viewing certificates at the local office generally costs the same as ordering a copy (7 pounds), and at least with a copy you get to keep it.

For Kent records generally, head to the Kent Family History web site (www.kfhs.org.uk. They sell CDs and microfiche covering most of the county, and very reasonably prices, considering the amount of information they contain.

There are a few pockets of online data around for Kent, but not many. Generally private websites with very limited scope.

Your other option is your local LDS Church Family History Centre. They also have many microfiche (and access to more). There are more in that format than online at the IGI site.

I have ancestors with the surname Twort which, over time, seems to have developed from the surname Tutt/Tutte.  My families are mainly in West Kent though.

The code (S14) on the Kent Registration Service site refers to marriages at the parish church of Folkestone St Mary http://extranet3.kent.gov.uk/sp/rois/marriagesearch.cfm

Parish registers for this church (and the others in East Kent) are available to view at Canterbury Cathedral Archives by appointment http://www.canterbury-cathedral.org/history/archives.aspx

The Heritage Room (upstairs) at Folkestone Library do have films for some parishes in the Shepway area but I'm not sure if they have marriages this late for the Folkestone parish church.  However, I do know that they have a printed index which includes all useful information from the Folkestone parish church registers covering this time period which I'm sure they would be only too glad to look up for you if you can't get there http://kent.gov.uk/LibrariespublicUI/OpeningTimes/LibraryDetails.aspx?id=32

For births and deaths (post 1837) you do need to purchase the certificates but you can alternatively use church baptism and burial registers though, of course, the baptism registers aren't likely to reveal the maiden name of the mother in the case of a married couple.
