Hamment STEVENSON

I am seeking to find the birth certificate of my great great granddad.  I can find nothing to go on in ancestry.com.

Hamment Stevenson (maybe Hampord  and even Stephenson but family name is Hamment) born Greytree, Ross Herefordshire? 1816. Married 17.8.1840.  One census showing him as Stephenson and a 25 year old apprentice.
He married a Mary Ann Crane from Suffolk.  Had two or perhaps three children.  ... Hamment 1843 and Fanny 1844 and I wonder about an Mary Ann 1846 .. born Llangarron or Ross.  Hamment Stephenson Senior died 1847.
As he is only in one census, I cannot trace his ancestors and Mary Ann remarried, as far as I can ascertain, a Daniel Wintle b 1816 and they called the children his but with the surname of Stevenson... however, I do not think they actually "tied the knot" until the time of David's death! They had a daughter Pamela Wintle b 1850. I found marriage Ap-Jn 1854 and a death for Daniel exactly same date!  They lived in Glewston, Herefordshire.

I completely lose the family but suspect that Mary Ann may have died but Pamela was put to live with her father's brother.

My great grandad appears in 1851 as Hamment Stevens living in Ross as an apprentice and states birthplace is Langarren.  All through the generations, there has been a Hamment Stevenson.

However, it is frustrating being unable to go back further than 1816.

With such an unusual christian name, I wonder if there might be a way of tracking down the birth certificate?

Any suggestions would be most gratefully received.  Ann

Hi Firstome

I think this request will do better on the Herefordshire board - I can't see a link to the previous request, so I'll split and move it for you.

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Me again!

I take it you don't yet have the marriage cert from 1840 - it would show his father's name and the witnesses might be family?

Have you looked on the Welsh censuses too, as sometimes the border areas come under Welsh counties.

Is this a traveller family - the unusual names might suggest that - in which case they might have been a bit reluctant to register events - although some would say that's a naughty generalisation on my part!

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Thank you for your comments.  As my great great grandad was born prior to birth certificates being available, I guess I should try getting  the marriage certificate.   I have a note he married 17.08.1840 so I will hunt down the data right now. I have searched the Welsh area too.  Living in Wales myself, I appreciate the proximity.

Regarding the travellers, I find this rather amusing as, on my paternal side, my great grandmother was a Romany Traveller.  At least her family recorded all there events in one local church and have been easy to track down.  Discovering this has been quite a surprise to my family.  I wonder if we can stand having yet another branch being Romany Travellers! he he  Ann

My money would be on their both being from Suffolk originally.  Ross, Herefordshire is where the Stevensons were as relative newlyweds in 1841, but both husband and wife are enumerated as not born in county.

You might well be right - on the other hand, Ross is one of those awkward places that's right on the boundary of Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire, so he might just have been confused!

I haven't looked at other censuses - I wonder why Ann thinks he was born Greytree?
