Hi,

Thank you for all the information. The piece I put up for help with reading was the 1851 census.

I have now checked the 1861 census as well. In the 1861 Sarah Jago (wife's daughter) has become Sarah Girdler and an older brother Samuel aged 16 appears as Samuel Girdler.  Then there are Charlotte, Susan and Eliza.

I have to say I am finding sorting out this part of the family a bit of a headache, I have a family of Jago's headed by Samuel Jago (glass cutter) and his wife Charlotte (nee Mouseley) who lived in the Strand area of London and had a string of children. The eldest being Samuel born 1814. Then about the time this Charlotte would be about 49 a Samuel (1845) is born giving the parents Samuel and Charlotte, followed by Sarah (1848) and William (1850) all baptised at Holborn, St. Andrew.  So to get to the point I have been trying to find out if Samuel Jago (b1814) married a Charlotte and they had these 3 children and then Samuel died and Charlotte remarried to William Girdler.  The William born 1850 never seems to appear again and possibly died.  So far I have found no deaths for either Samuel or William.

To cut a long story short the Sarah Jago who appears as wife's daughter in the 1851 census is the same age as the Sarah Jago mentioned above.  Then in the 1861 an older brother Samuel appears (both then Girdler's) who is the same age as the Samuel Jago above.  One problem with all this is finding evidence and the fact that Charlotte would only have been 17 when Samuel was born. (Mind you Charlotte Mouseley was only 15 when she married). Also Charlotte would have had to remarry fairly quickly to William Girdler.

I would value your opinions as to whether I might be on the right track, or barking up the wrong tree.

Thanks again,

Cheers
Magrat

Can anyone help with reading the surname of William and also what sort of glass cutter is it?
Hi Magrat,
Flint Glass was introduced in the beginning of the 19th century and is used in the manufacture of scientific lenses.

Hi, my family  Game is Güdler (guedler) (very seldom) and the signature looks very much like that. But if i understand that dialogue below right, there is no connection from your findings to germany?

Greetings!

Juergen

Hi Juergen,

Welcome to Rootschat.  The William Girdler/Gudler in this family was born in Blackfriars, London.  As it is his wife's daughter I have been interested in I have not looked at his family much. From what I have seen there is no mention of Germany.

Cheers,
Magrat
