Look Up Request: Clow - London
« on: Saturday 28 March 09 19:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Once again I am asking for assistance please. I am trying to find out who the parents were of the following children please:

1901 Census: The following are shown as grandchildren of John James Clow

Maud Clow 18
Lily Clow 14
Rose Clow 9

1891 Census: The following are shown as grandchildren of John James Clow

George B Clow 9
Maud Clow 8
William Clow 7
Lily Clow 5

St Bartholomew London City

I cannot find the births of the children on the BDM but I know that the son of John James Clow was a widower by 1891 but again, I have been unable to find details of his marriage in order to see if it was his wife who was the mother of the above named childre.

I know William was born in Clerkenwell and his parents lived in London. So any help, guidance, suggestions etc would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks
Christine

Hi Christine,

I think Holborn is the correct registration district for St Luke, so this is likely to be Lily's birth:

Lily Clow
Sep 1886
Holborn 1b 753

Hard to tell who the children belong to without seeing the birth certs - as well as William, Mary A and maybe even Sarah were old enough to be their mothers too
(we don't even know whether they are siblings or cousins...)

Sorry, I'm not being much help  :-\

Added:
William Mansell Clow, Mar 1884 Holborn 1b 795
Maud Emily Clow, Sep 1882 Holborn 1b 779

I'm afraid of no ghost

Hi Tati

Many thanks for your prompt response to this and for the information you have provided. The only reason I was opting for William is with the children having the surname Clow. I was assuming the children's parents were married and if their surname was Clow - it meant that their father had the surname was Clow. William is shown as a widower in the 1891 census and living with his brother.

I really appreciate the assistance you have given me with this. Thank you!

Christine

From FreeBMD
William David CLOW married Mary Jane MANSELL, Sep qtr 1880, Holborn, 1b 1086. Fits with the second name of one of the sons. Getting the birth cert for William Mansell CLOW would confirm or deny this.

There is a death for a Mary Jane CLOW, Sep qtr 1888, Islington, 1b 174, aged 31 which might be her.

Mary Jane MANSELL born 3 Aug 1857, bapt 23 Aug 1857, St Luke Old St Finsbury, parents George Thomas MANSELL and Sarah Ann

George Thomas MANSELL married Sarah Ann RHODES, 22 Jul 1849, St John the Baptist, Shoreditch

Extracted entries IGI.

George T MANSELL and John CLOW were both jewellers, probably how William and Mary Jane met.

In 1891 Laura A CLOW is with her aunt and uncle Alfred and Sarah BEESLEY in Hackney. Sarah BEESLEY was formerly Sarah MANSELL and sister of Mary Jane.

Her birth was registered as Laura Alice MANSELL, Jun qtr 1879, Holborn. William CLOW may or may not have been her father.

Laura marries as CLOW Jun qtr 1899 to Ernest GATEHOUSE.

Hi there Rootschat friends!

Thank you for all of your help on the above queries - it has opened up so many avenues for me to look at now. I am struggling to find the death of William David Clow b: 1858. I know it's pushing it after all the work you have done for me already but I was wondering if, in your searches, any of you came across of William David Clow please. I have found him on the 1901 census but not on the 1911 census. I have tried parish records, BMD, Family Org etc etc but cannot find him at all.

Once again any help will be greatly appreciated - many thanks
Christine
