Good afternoon everyone,
I'd appreciate any help or pointers for the following query:
Another board member has very kindly found a marriage record in Jersey for an ancestor of mine, which recorded that she was born in about 1821 in Tallow, Waterford. The family would have been Catholic and her father's name was John.
There is something of a puzzle to this though :
Later records in the Cape Colony, have her recorded as Mary CAPLES, but the marriage record from Jersey shows her surname as KEPLISS. She was not literate at the time and one might be able to explain the difference to accents/pronunciation/maybe a french speaking official in Jersey.
I'd very much like to try and trace a birth or baptism record for Mary in the Tallow civil records or Church baptsim records, and would need to be on the lookout for either of the surnames. Any advice would be most welcome.
best wishes
Leanne
