David Milne Gardner
« on: Wednesday 25 March 09 18:37 GMT (UK) »
I am searching for information on David Milne Gardner born 20th November 1893. His Mother was Maggie Gardner and she married Henry Pettie in 1898. There is no father listed on Davids birth certificate. Just his mother Maggie. When his mother married in 1898 she was already 6months pregnant with another baby and she had what was known as an irregular marriage. I am trying to see if it was possible for this Henry Pettie to have been also the father of David.
I am wondering if there is some way of searching kirk sessions to see if the name of the father was listed.

David was born at 60 Logie Street Dundee. His Grandparents were Alexander Gibson Gardner Agnes Milne Doig.

Any information would be appreciated.

His parents listed as Alexander Gibson Gardner and Agnes Doig Milne, other children Margaret Love Gardner b. 13 Mar 1870, Kate McPherson Gardner b. 26 Feb 1872 and Alexander Gibson Gardner b. 28 Feb 1874.  Hope this helps.

I am wondering if there is some way of searching kirk sessions to see if the name of the father was listed.

Bit late, but the Kirk Session minutes are held in the National Archives of Scotland www.nas.gov.uk. They are in the catalogue under CH2/ but they are not available online so you would need to go in person or get someone to go on your behalf to search them. There are links to lists of researchers and record agents who would do this on the NAS web site.

However I wonder whether 1898 is a bit late for this sort of detail to be in the Kirk Session minutes of a major city. With a large and growing population, and lots of different denominations, it would have been very easy for an illegitimacy to escape the notice of the Session.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
