« on: Tuesday 24 March 09 22:44 GMT (UK) »
For a friend...

James LAMB born c1920 NZ died 4 July 1956 when he was fatally wounded in
a mine disaster.
The mine was McDONALD MINE situated Waikokowai New Zealand.

Have looked in Papers Past perhaps in the incorrect area.

Would  appreciate  any info relating to his death, newspapers, obits perhaps even a photo & also about the mine itself.

Thankyou,
Tiffaney

Hi

Where was "Waikokowai"  ... exactly ?
Later edit:   Waikato  ....  Huntly ?

Edward was a part of Wellington's first band in 1844...any know data of the Band would also be appreciated.

[1844  ??? ]    1944 ?

And who is Edward ??
(Isn't it "a James LAMB" you are asking about ?)

Where did the info about this band, come from ?

Lu

Hi

Unfortunately PapersPast's dates, don't extend to the 1950's.

Have you tried a "google" search for information ?   (Mine accidents etc. ?)

Archives NZ (Wellington) - may have a coroner's report on the accident ?

You could perhaps try Hamilton Library - they may have easy access to info about incidents that occurred in "their patch" ?

Thanks Lu.....
Did try dear 'ole google.... there were some mine disasaters but not the one my friend requires & as you say PapersPast doesn't extend to 1950's.

Will give Archives NZ Wellington a try...also Hamilton library.

Feel lucky...so thank you for above...very helpful

Hi Tiff

My maternal grandparents settled in Waikokowai when they arrived from Scotland in 1926/7. My mother and her siblings were pupils at Waikokowai School. I found references to them and photographs of them in the "Waikokowai School 80th Jubilee" Booklet from 2 March 1985. I read my copy in the NZRoom at the Canterbury Pub.Library. In it are articles on the history of both the Renown and McDonald mines. At the end of the article on the McDonald Mine the writer records the death of three men incl Jim Lamb jnr in 1955. ( Your date was 1956)

There are mentions  and photos of other Lambs, namely Mary, Gail, Shirley, Kevin, Jimmy Lamb and family and a Mr S. There was also a Mr Mick Lamb who sustained a neck injury in an accident in the Renown mine on 31 August 1955.

Would advise you to track it down at the Library
