People are always asking questions about The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland.

Click here to read details about the Londonderry Estate Office Archives. These contain 12,000 documents and volumes relating to the Londonderry Estate Office, Newtownards, Co. Down which cover the period from the seventeenth to the twentieth ceentury.

The Ulster Transpost Authority Archives at PRONI contain Salaries and Wages books where people should be able to obtain  information about their ancestors if they worked for the Railways in the north of Ireland

The UTA had been set up in 1948 to take over the functions of the Northern Ireland Road Transport Board and to operate the Belfast & County Down Railway. The railways of the Northern Counties Committee also became part of the UTA in 1948, and in 1958 the Great Northern Railway was partitioned between the UTA and CIÉ. By 1958, then, the UTA was responsible for the archives of the NIRTB, the B&CDR, and the NCC, and their constituent companies, and part of the GNR, and some records of some of its constituent companies. The offices of the UTA were at Linenhall Street, Belfast, and in 1965 the UTA handed its archives to Public Records Office NI (PRONI) and moved to other accommodation at Great Victoria Street and York Road.

Dear All

I've recently applied, under FOI legislation, for the release of records held by PRO-NI that are classified as "closed" for 100 years. In my case Workhouse and "Asylum"records (1909, 1933 & 1939).

I've been successful in getting what I've asked for, and the little that hasn't been disclosed, I've lodged an appeal and am very hopeful that I will get the info the I've requested.

(I will, if needs be, take this to the the Information Commissioner -  there is no valid reason that the State should be able to withhold information about our long gone predecessors) .

Send your request via the PRO-NI site, give as much info as possible and make sure that you ask that your request is dealt with under FOI, this ensures a 20 working day response.

FOI is "classification and purpose blind" ie it doesn't matter if its confidential or why you what it- the only way it can be witheld is under an FOI exemption, and Goverment Departments are loath to go through the hoops that exemptions involve! 

The more people that know of this the better!

An E-Consultation re PRONI Admittance and Fees 

An article in the December issue of Ancestors mentioned the PRONI e-consultation document which is designed to seek your views on proposals by the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL) to amend and update existing legislation relating to the admittance rules and fees charged by the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland. Your comments must be received by Tuesday 2nd December, 2008, and should be sent to the Response Co-ordinator at the address below:

Just been on the PRONI website and I see they have a new online index of pre 1858 wills up and running.

Not as much information as on the post 1858 will calender index on the same site but a very useful tool.

Further to the econsultation, legislation came into effect on 13 April revising the fees charged by PRONI.  One of the changes made was to introduce a charge for the viewing of online wills (£0.60 per will or £10.00 for a month's unlimited access).

I have harboured the suspicion for a while that the delay in putting the long promised wills online was to do with introducing a charge to view them, so hopefully, with that hurdle now passed, we can expect to see the wills appear on the website soon (fingers crossed!!).

And the charges don't seem too bad either...
