Strachur - Tracing McNab
« on: Monday 23 March 09 21:30 GMT (UK) »
Hi folks, new to the board and hopefully you's may be of help.

Managed to trace my Grandfather's family to Strachur Argyll but i have hit a dead end. I have used Scotlandspeople.org to good effect but have now hit a snag. My Grandfather died back in late 70's/ early 80's. Donald ( Dougie ) McNab. Son of Donald McNab ( Retired Coachman ) Died 1936 in Strachur and Catherine McNab ( Nee McKay ). He had 2 brothers John and the other i think was Alex. Maybe possible that Alex went on to play for Greenock Morton then moved to the USA although not 100% sure.

If anyone in Strachur uses the forum or indeed anyone else that could help me in any way i would very much appreciate it.

Kind Regards

Alan MacLennan

Hi Alan

Please stick to just one thread per query, especially for Scotland where generous Rootschatters have been known to spend their own money, or go out of their way, to answer requests.  Also it gets a bit frustrating if you find that the work is duplicated - which can mean that your requests go ignored in the worst case scenario.

Thanks!

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

I came across your message on Roots chat and wondered if there might be a connection between you McNab family and mine. My granny was Catherine Cowan McNab, born 1894;died 1984.  Her father was Andrew Alexander McNab.  Her siblings included a brother Donald McVean McNab who left Greenock in about 1940 after his wife died.  My Granny always said he was in the London area.  He was born in 1902 and I think died in Dacorum, Hemel Hempsted in 1982.  Donald and Catherine's mother was Christina McVean, born and brought up in Strachur.
Donald and Catherine had two sisters - Annie and Mary (known as Polly) and two brothers Alexander and John.
It seems that there are a lot of similarities. My Granny married John Dorren and they had two sons - Robert, born 1918 and my father Donald McVean Dorren born 1923.  Sadly all are no dead.
If you think there is a link feel free to email me on (*).  I will be away from 13th April 2011 until 22nd April but would reply as soon as possible.

Linda

Hi Linda

Many thanks for your reply, after my mum had passed away i followed a different route after finding more information on my mum's background and discovered that the family of McNab's came from over this side of the Clyde and managed to trace back to the late 1700's and also discovered more about her mother's side also.

I managed to trace her mum's resting place which was alongside my great grandfather and grandmother, i was so glad she managed to see it before she passed away.

Many thanks to all for the info

Scotlandspeople.org helped very much indeed

This site was so good that my brother inlaw has managed to trace his family back and across to Ireland so thanks to all for that also
