John Aitken, b 1827, died 1913, Newington, age 86 and his wife, Grace Aitken, nee Tennant, d. 16 October, 1910, age 80 years.
Their third and youngest surviving son, Thomas Aitken, b. 4 April, 1871, West Linton, after leaving West Linton, presumably aged about 19, after working with his father as a Joiner, boards with Janet Steele, in Wishaw, near Glasgow.
He's on the 1891 Census as a Boarder at 53 Caledonia Road, Cambusnethan, Wishaw, the home of Janet Steele. I'm still seeking any possible details of Thomas' life in Wishaw?
Later, Thomas attends Spurgeon's College, in London and I'm seeking details of where it was that he stayed, whilst training to be a missionary?
He leaves the UK, (no details as yet of how and exactly when?), sent as a Baptist Missionary, to where? I've details that he was a missionary on St Vincent, Cape Verde Islands for about six months. Thomas may have landed up on St Vincent, as a shipwreck survivor, being originally bound for another destination, possibly the Island of St Helena, or South Africa? Both localities later on, he did minister in, for years.
Any help to fill in the jigsaw will be much appreciated.
