REIDS of Glasgow
« on: Monday 23 March 09 11:24 GMT (UK) »
I was checking old newspapers for my Irish REID Family, and came across an article in the Glasgow Herald  Wednesday, October 31, 1860,  titled "REIDS of Glasgow 1860". It was written by Robert REID, Strahoun Lodge, Isle of Cumbrae.

Although it has nothing to do with my Irish REID Family, I thought it may be of some interest to a Glasgow REID researcher. It has a great deal of information in it regarding the author's family tree pre-1860.

I've enlarged the article (easier to read) and copied/pasted it into a 5 Page Word Document. If you would like a copy of it please PM me with your email address, and I will email it to you as an attachment (583KB).

Les,

This is just a long shot but my Irish Reid was Samuel Reid, parents John Reid and Jane McNeice.
According to all his Scottish records he was born in Ireland in 1843. I first have him in the first Census I can find him in is 1871. He married Grace McCreadie in 1869 but can find no earlier trace of him and although he always gives Ireland as his place of birth he never gives a county.
Probably not one of yours as there is so many of them but I always live in hope.

Hi Wini

I'd love to be able to help you with your Samuel REID, but I don't think I can. I'm looking for a Matthew REID abt.1785 Newry(?), Co.Down. He married there early 1800's, had 2 daughters there abt.1817 and abt 1820, migrated to Tasmania, AUS, 1833 and died 1838.

I'm trying to confirm his Irish records, but having difficulty doing so. By co-incidence, I'm trying to get him "matched" up to a family of REID's from Newry, whose father was a Samuel REID, however that Samuel was born in the 1740's. At this stage there is no positive evidence that my Mathew REID came fro, Samuel REID's family.

And by another co-incidence, I have also have a McCREADIE/McCREADY ancestor. William b.abt.1785 Co.Down. Transpsorted to Australia as a convict 1823 and d.1856.

A small world, but with family research, far too big   >:(

Well at least you should have the convict records which is good.
I wish Reid wasn't such a common name. My brother was given Reid as a middle name and he had absolutely no idea where it came from until I was able to trace the Reids back to Samuel.
