George Levesley, Master Mariner of Spalding
« on: Monday 23 March 09 07:38 GMT (UK) »
I am having a problem finding this George Levesley before 1861 census. Apart from finding out he was married to Isabella (don't know her maiden name) in 1846. A William Fredrick Levesley married Ann Presgrave in 1830, they had a son George 1835, and William Frederick 1837. I found a Ann Levesley again in 1841census, age 40 (looks like Wife of mariner or sailor at Sea) partly crossed out, with sons, John 9, George 5, & William 3, but this can't be the right family as in 1861 the George I am looking for was 39. Can anyone help find him in1841 or 1851 and also find me the maiden name of his wife. The names George & William seem to be with both families so they may have been related.
Regards
Keith

Marriages Mar 1846
LEVESLAY    George         Spalding    14   710
PRIESTLEY    Isabella         Spalding    14   710

29 Jan 1846 at Spalding
George LEVESLAY (son of William) to Isabella PRIESTLEY (dau of William)

from the Spalding spreadsheet here http://s10.freefronthost.com/mi/index.html

It seems that four children (including a George) were bap at Spalding in Oct 1831, children of William LEVESLEY and Mary ... as William married Ann in 1830, these could have been children from another William or from an earlier marriage.

EDIT: Having looked a bit closer, William and Mary are at the bottom of the same page that has Ann LEVESLEY.  Notice that William and Mary were born "out of county".  Daughter Ann with them, although aged 15, was another of the 1831 baptisms.  She married George SLY in 1842 - note that he was the lodger in 1841!

Thanks for info Geoff,
I am still a little confused by all this info tho. The four children in 1831 with a George? may be the George aged 39 married to Isabella in 1846. Will try and have a look at the Spalding spreedsheet. Maybe it will then be clearer to me.

Hi GeoffE,
Still trying to find out more about George Levesley of Spalding, born in 1821. George & Isabella marriage in 1846 seems to be correct and his father was William. Could it be that this was the William & Mary that had four children christened in 1831. I also found in 1830 a marriage of William Fredrick Levesley to Ann Presgrave that caused me to be confused.. What was the names of the other children of the four christened in 1831?
Regards
Keith

Baptisms at Spalding, children of William and Mary LEVESLEY
18 Oct 1831 - George
26 Oct 1831 - Eliza, Lucy and Ann

3 May 1835 - George of William Frederick and Ann
29 Oct 1837 - William Frederick of William Frederick and Ann.

It was William Frederick who married Ann in 1830

Hi Geoff,
The George I am researching (the one who married Isabella in 1846) his father was William. If he is the son of William & Mary he would have been 10 when he was baptized. Did not know he had three sisters & wonder why they were baptized all together a week later. The other George & William Fredrick on 3rd May 1835 & 29th Oct 1837 are on the 1841 census aged 5 & 3. As both families had members as Mariners I am sure they were all related. ie William Fredrick who married Ann was a mariner (1841 census Ann, 40, Wife of mariner at sea), his son George in the 1861 census was master of the "Joseph & Ann" riding at Anchor at Boston Deeps, the other George born 1821 was a Master mariner and his grandson has a painting of the "Breeze" captain George Levesley 1856. I have found him in all the other census years up to 1901. No wonder I was getting confused.

I am looking for information about the Levesley master mariners from spalding. I have picked up quite a bit from these threads and from ancestry about George (born 1821) who married Isabella Priestley. Also their son James Henry levesley (born 1865) in Spalding. George's father seems to be William, and mother Mary. But I would like to know more about the life of master mariners in spalding if possible, particularly the Levesley family.

Many thanks.

Lisa :)

Hi Lisa,
i can give you more information on the Levesley family of mariners of Spalding but not on this site as I have just finished a book about Shipping and Mariners of Spalding and having signed a contract with a publisher. George Levesley was a friend of my Gt Gt Grandfather and was a witness at his wedding.  If you contact me with a private message and tell me how you are connected with the family then I can perhaps give you more information.

Keith
