ELPHICK, Chailey pre-reg.
« on: Sunday 22 March 09 19:46 GMT (UK) »
John LAKER married Hannah ELPHICK, in the Union Street Chapel,  Brighton, 1845.  She was living at 7 George Street Gardens, Brighton.  Hannah's father was John, a carpenter.

Are there Protestant Independent Dissenter records that could be consulted?

I have been able to trace them, as a married couple, through the 1851
through 1901 censuses and Hannah's birth year is stated as 1819 in
Chailey -  consistently.

The only Hannah ELPHICK that I can find on the 1841 census is b.1817, a female servant, living in High Street, Lewes,  next door to an Elphick family.

I cannot find a birth or christening for her.  I cannot  identify her
father, John on any census. I am at a loss!

I have looked at the Sussex OPC site, no luck.

The IGI has four Hannah ELPHICKs, but none that fit - even loosely.

I have written to all of the ELPHICK member's interest on the SFHG website and, so far, no luck.

A lookup in the parish registers would be appreciated, if this is possible.

Hi June

I went to ESRO this morning and thought I would have a look at the Chailey parish registers for you.

Unfortunately I could not find a Hannah Elphick baptised there at all.  There were a number of Elphicks in the area but no Hannah.

Hi Kerry:

Thank you for taking the trouble to look at the PRs.

Where do I go from here?

I ran a list of parishes within an eight mile radius of Chailey in Parloc and will try each of these towns on Hugh Wallace's site, however, if she does not appear on the IGI, how will she appear on that site!

Hi,

In 1861 John LAKER Jnr is living with his grandmother Elizabeth SCOTT b.1796 Shermanbury, Sussex. Her daughter Esther SCOTT is also there. In 1851 Esther SCOTT is with John and Hannah LAKER in Shoreditch, so this definitely looks like one family.

This is just a possible theory :)

Elizabeth BROWN
Christening:  09 MAR 1796   Shermanbury, Sussex
Father:  John BROWN
Mother:  Susan

These documents are held at East Sussex;
Warrants to constables to apprehend putative and absconding fathers  PAR415/34/3
Warrant to arrest John Elphick, St Thomas in the Cliffe, servant,   7 Dec 1816, PAR415/34/3/8
Contents:
Father of the unborn child of Elizabeth Brown

John ELPHICK
Spouse:  Elizabeth BROWN
Marriage:  31 DEC 1816   Saint Thomas, Lewes, Sussex

Sarah ELPHICK
Christening:  30 MAR 1817   Saint Thomas, Lewes, Sussex
Father:  John ELPHICK
Mother:  Elizabeth

A Sarah ELPHICK marries Henry WOOLGAR 25 Dec 1841, Brighton. In the 1851 census she is 34 and gives her birthplace as Chailey.

Burial
John ELPHICK
Age: 38
11 Mar 1821
Place: St.Peter, Chailey, Sussex

Now if only I could find a Elizabeth ELPHICK - James SCOTT marriage or a baptism for Hannah I'd feel more confident but unfortunately I can't :(

Regards
Daisy

Perhaps I can assist:

James Scott m Elizabeth Elphick (widow) 25 Dec 1821 St John sub Castro, Lewes

John Elphick married Elizabeth Brown 31 Dec 1816 St Thomas, CLiffe.

The constables obviously caught their man  ;)

I was posting a reply to Daisy at the same time as Nell was posting to the list - mine went into outer space so I will try to remember what I said to Daisy and to answer Nell's post.

Daisy:

Thank you very much for all that info.  I had the 1861 census for John LAKER Jr., but could not make a connection to the SCOTTs.

The BROWNs I had not heard of so this is all new to me.

I have found Est(h)er SCOTT on the 1841 census and, yes, her parents were James and Elizabeth.  I have also found the marriage of James SCOTT to Elizabeth ELPHICK, Widow, botp (B) at Lewes St. John sub Castro on 25 December, 1821 (nine months after the burial of John Elphick).

Looks as if your "possible theory" is correct. Everything is starting to slot into place.  It seems that John LAKER Sr. left his son, John Jr. with the grandmother to be raised.  Wish they would not do this, it just adds to the confusion!

I am not sure that the ELPHICK/WOOLGAR marriage comes into play in my family.  In the 1851 census she is living in Hoxton with husband John LAKER.  There must have been two Sarah ELPHICKs born in Chailey at around the same time.  that's all I can think of.

Daisy, I know I made other observations, but my mind is awhirl now.  Just to let you know that I am very grateful.

Nell:
thank you for your help and for confirming the ELPHICK/BROWN marriage.   I guess we both found the SCOTT/ELPHICK marriage at the same time.

It looks as if all of these events happened in Lewes.  What puzzles me (and makes me uncomfortable)  is her insistence that she was born in Chailey!?!.

Hello June,

I think Sarah ELPHICK is Hannah's sister I've found her baptism in Lewes but she still says in 1851 that she was from Chailey, that could be because the family moved there while she was too young to realise she came from somewhere else :)

Thanks Nell for finding the SCOTT/ELPHICK marriage I couldn't see it anywhere 8) :)
