Liverpool street maps 1840
« on: Sunday 22 March 09 14:14 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have any tips where I could find any street maps of the Toxteth area for 1840/1850. Preferably online but where to purchase them from if not available on line.
Regards,
Dave

Hi Dave

What part of Toxteth Park are you interested in? Alan Godfrey Maps have just published the St James' Mount large scale plan from the mid 19th Century, so most of TP above Upper Parliament Street (but only about 15% of the total) is now covered. There are also a few bits below Upper Parliament Street. Most of Toxteth Park would have been undeveloped in 1840-50.

If you google 'old ordnance survey maps' you should find links to a few resellers of OS plans of the period. These can cost £30-40 for good quality copies. Godfrey's use plans from the Scottish Library and the British Library should have copies.

If you are looking for a big-ish street then six inches to one mile will do. But if you are looking for say a court you will need the 50 inch (1:1250) series.

Hi Dave,
not sure whether you will find what you want on here; but I thought I would pass it on to you, just in case.

It might come in useful at some stage - hope so.

Thanks to both Ken and Paulene for your help. I will have a look at those suggestions as soon as work and granchildren permit. Thanks once again. Hope you don't mind if I tap your knowledge again soon,

Dave.

Just to add, the  link below should take you to the old maps website showing the Toxteth Park area,

Just tried the link myself and it's taking me to the website but the site won't allow me to do a search, whatever I type in I get the message that my search is too big.  Anyone else having this problem?  It used to be an easy site to search  ???

sorry Dave

Jean
