ARCHWAY RECORD  New Zealand Archives

Landlord: State Advances - Tenant: J S and L K Casely, 39 Trinity Avenue, Lower Hutt     no date - no date

agency: L-LH      series:1      box/item: 3     record: 11/1/1165

Those initials definitely match John Stanley and Lillian Kate.

State Advances is the NZ state owned national housing agency.

Do you have any idea as to what this document might concern?  Eviction for non payment of the rent?

Clearly it is unwise to jump to conclusions about what information is contained in the abovementioned (undated) file !
But if you'd extended your search to discovering more about the history of State Advances, then you would have learned that this agency had a number of different roles over its lifetime.
[e.g.  It was for a time "a lender" (mortgages)  .... and in 1950 legislation was introduced, which enabled State tenants, to purchase their (State-owned) homes.]

You'll note also that this Archives NZ file, has a viewing restriction placed on it.   (If you wish to have a copy of same, then refer to the added notes, given on the Archway (Archives NZ) website).

It is somewhat difficult to understand, just why it is you are now chasing a record for a "Sarah Ann MILLER" (as a possible wife of John MILLER)  ... when quite obviously the newspaper clipping, states that her name was "Jane"  ????

As you have ordered the NZ Death Certificate for this "John MILLER",  then it seems prudent to await this record, which ideally will reveal the correct name (and maiden name) of John MILLER's wife.

Have you investigated whether there is a war service record for this John MILLER, which might give you further information ?  (His service number was given in his death notice).

So does the Wellington Electoral Roll give any match on a John and Saran Ann Miller in Newtown in 1938 or later in Lower Hutt in 1946?

And is there any mention of a death notice in The Dominion for Sarah Ann Miller's death on January 9th, 1947
mentioning her husband as John Miller?

Would like to make you aware also, that Electoral / Directory Roll information is NOT available online (nor is it in easily-accessed CD format).     Look-ups for same can only be done at Libraries (and some other repositories)  ...  this also applies to newspaper death notice searches.   Therefore you are reliant upon a fellow RootsChatter, volunteering to source this information on your behalf.

I have checked back on my notes made in 1980 whilst "interviewing" my late great Uncle Fred about the MILLER family.

It almost definitely appears that I made a mistake saying that his wife was named Jane, and it was John Miller's
sister Jane Ann Miller who, in fact, also emigrated to New Zealand.

The FreeBMD search facility only finds a marriage match between 1886 and 1890 for

Miller            John     Carlisle    10b   627
Watson    Sarah Ann Carlisle    10b 627

in September 1888.  As this marriage was in Carlisle, I have my doubts if it is a good match.

Did you also consider this marriage (registered at Tynemouth) ???

FREE BMD (UK)

Marriages - DEC - 1888

MILLER - John  (Brides:  Jane JOHNSON or, Elizabeth DRODGE) Reg. Tynemouth

I have just come across all the messages at this chat site.

According to the military records for John Miller on the Find My Past site, the father of John Miller was Jacob Miller, a metal broker for New York Co. in Northumberland.  He enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers on August 31, 1888 in Newcastle upon Tyne.  His occupation of the time was as a miner.

Because of this information, I do not think the John Miller in question is John Emmett Miller, son of John Miller, tobacconist and Margaret Ann Iggo.

I have a newspaper cutting from the (Wellington) Evening News, which sadly is undated, but which must be from the period 1940 - 1950.

So that points to the Golden Wedding (50th anniversary) of John and Jane Miller being in 1937, and their wedding being in 1887.

Hi

Since your postings in 2009, a lot of new (and hopefully, helpful) information, has now become available online.   ;)

The (undated) newspaper cutting you spoke of, can be found at  > >
