Connolly's in Skerries
« on: Friday 20 March 09 21:07 GMT (UK) »
Family rumour has it that my maternal G Grandparents (Connollys) lived in or around Skerries in the 1800's..

My maternal Connolly G Grandfather John was living in Dublin in the 1911 census and is shown as a Retired Captain KOSB. His daughter (my Grandmother) was borne in Fermoy barracks obviously whilst John was in the Army

I cant find any evidence to back the Skerries rumour up (but all the family seem to know of it)

Can anyone advise where I might get some more information

Thanks

You can see quite a lot of information about John Connolly in that 1911 Census:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000097701/

He was born in England about 1850, married at least twice, had at least 4 children. Given that he reached the rank of Captain in the Kings Own Scottish Borderers, there should be a fair amount of military records available at Kew. (eg from info on the web I see that he retired from the army on 26 Apr 1893.)

So you should be able to trace back at least another generation.

Yes I have the 1911 census plus all his promotions from the Army List at Kew as well as the date he retired... Its the Skerries bit I am having trouble with as I cant find any mention of it in any records.

Like all gfamilies I recall stories told to me by my Grandmother (his daughter) but cannot substantiate t

Thanks again & regards

Alan

Let us know what you have discovered about Capt Connolly's parents (names, dates, locations, etc), and maybe someone will identify a connection with Skerries.

We can't really help you with the 1800s with information only from the 1890s and 1900s!
