Hello,
Does anyone know of a number of Russian Jews moving to England in the late 1700s/early 1800s? I know the problems with the 'Pale of Settlement' was probably the reason. My husband's ancestor Alexander Levy was a Russian Jew and married in 1809 in Newcastle. Did they settle in established Jewish communities? His children later anglicised their name to Leavey. All were married and baptised in churches, did many Jewish families have to do this?
I would love to know any general details available or any useful links,
Thanks,
Sally
