Hello Daveey,
Are you sure that is your Mary in 1901 at the lodging house? The one I can see is married to Isaac Wood and they are together in Oldham in 1891. I think there is a possible marriage for them on Free BMD - Isaac Wood and Mary Killmartain in 1881.

Your Mary is here in 1891 RG12; Piece: 3295; Folio 76; Page 55
Wyre Street Ashton Under Lyne which I think you already have. The older son is listed as J C? Do you know the full name? Have you found them in 1881?
There is a big gap between the boys which is also a bit of a puzzle  ???
I'll keep thinking  and have another look ;)

Back again  :) I do apologise that I am asking lots of questions but I just want to make sure that you are not going off on the wrong road.

I'l just post the link re your post re Herbert so that it makes it easier for people to see what we are talking about.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,369377.msg2443425.html#msg2443425

I can see his marriage on Free BMD -Chorley district 1906.
Have you got the certificate?
Is there definitely no father named for Herbert?
Have you checked the 1911 census? Does that say Ashton Under Lyne too? (Just that I can't see him in 1901 at the moment)

I have looked at the 1911 indexes and can see Nancy and Herbert I think but it doesn't show birthplace until you pay. I have tried with Ashton and it fits (Ashton under Lyne didn't show).

As a miner, or looking for work, you can understand that Herbert would move for work but there is also Ashton in Makerfield which is about 10 miles from Wigan (rather than about 30 miles (Standish to  Ashton under Lyne).

I'm sorry if I am on the wrong thing altogether here and I am hoping that you have the information re Herbert.

I must add though that at the moment the Herbert you mention is the only one born 'Ashton' in census and that is only in 1891  :(

Added: Think I have found Herbert in 1901 transcribed as 'Hood' and place of birth Ashton under Lyme instead of Lyne

Hello again,
I've been thinking about this today- perhaps you have the right Herbert and mother Mary (1891) but not the right Mary in 1901.
Does the marriage certificate give any clues- addresses or witnesses?

The child J C Wood should be around with Mary in 1881 but I can't see them  :-\

Thanks for all your help ladies and gentelmen you certainly have opened up some more avenues
Sadly I have no more documentary evidence at this time with regard to Herbert, Mary or JC. The only other fact is that I have found Herbert and Nancy@s ( Norburn) grave in Darwen Cemetery, it is only a simple grave purchased under the perpetuity scheme with no headstone at the time of both their deaths.
I do apologize for not getting back to you earlier due to working away however thanks again for all your hard work
