Hi Mary

You don't search as such but view each page of each register separately ie. the parish registers aren't indexed on the site.  You enter via the "parish registers online" link on the left of the page and then select the parish and then select the particular register that you wish to view which gives you a whole list of images which you need to view separately.

http://www.familysearch.org is incomplete but can often be used to locate events and there is a partial index of marriages http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~fleming/cityark.htm

Hope this helps but if you get stuck just shout and somebody will help you look.

thanks for all the replies -  yes it is fun finding that elsuive ancestor - took me 10 years to loacte a marriage cert as one of my ancestors was wrongly names on a death cert.

The problem I have is my ancestor was born Gillingham according to the 1851 census.

The 1861/1871 census he doesn't know where he was born.

I will post on a seperate thread to see if anyone can suggest where I can search next
