thanks for all the replies - yes it is fun finding that elsuive ancestor - took me 10 years to loacte a marriage cert as one of my ancestors was wrongly names on a death cert.
The problem I have is my ancestor was born Gillingham according to the 1851 census.
The 1861/1871 census he doesn't know where he was born.
I will post on a seperate thread to see if anyone can suggest where I can search next
