Statton birth in Belpers

Greetings from NZ.

I am looking for any suggestions as to how to trace the family of Flora Statton born Belper Jun 1888 7b    615 according to FreeBMD.
She married Harry Leyman in Tavistock, 1917 but apart from that I have nothing.

Any help or suggestions welcomed

Are you very sure the person you are searching for is the Flora registered Belper Jun 1888? Just wondering because I can't see her on any census and there's a death as follows:

No, I'm not sure she's the right one - just the only one I could find on FreeBMD.

The one I want is the Flora Statton who married Harry Leyman in Tavistock in 1917.
Perhaps I should try this post in the Cornwall Board ??

Hmmm. Mysterious. I can't see a birth or a census match. I thought maybe she was a widow at marriage but it doesn't look like it - her children's birth show Statton as her maiden name.

Any idea what the middle initial G stood for? Do you know when she died (just so we can check her birth year)?

Hi Tati,
I'm trying to help a dear friend trace her ancestors.
Flora Statton and Harry Leyman were her grandparents.

All I know is in this note she sent <<<Grandfather Harry May Leyman born Bere alston Devon 26th September 1888 His father John Leyman Mother Ellen Leyman born Avery. I think Grandad was one of at least 5.  Bereferris which is the village just down the road on the estuary Tamar is also listed on the birth certificate but could be the general area too. Grandad was in the Royal Navy and was a chief Petty Officer Cook. I think he either transferred to NZ navy or was seconded or NZ navy still British in the early 1930s. He married Flora Glencora Statton ??when but Dad Kenneth Harry Leyman born 20th September 1920 and there was an older sister Winifred.  I seem to remember seeing the name Horrell on my grandmothers side but not sure where it comes in.>>>

It is the Statton side of the family that I'm now working on.
So the "G" stands for Glencora.
I have no idea where or when she died.
I found their Sep 1917 marriage on FreeBMD.
Also found on FindMyPast  a record of father Harry and son Kenneth travelling to Auckland NZ from Southampton in 1931.

So what happened to mother Flora and any other children is a mystery.
Any more details on Flora or her children would be welcome.

Hi John,

Flora Glencora is a very rare name, therefore I have a theory.

The only Flora Glencora birth I can see at all is:

Flora Glencora Hooper
Dec 1897 Tavistock 5b 324

This girl is to be found in 1901 at Bere Ferrers/Bere Alston:

All born Bere Alston 

Now, searching FreeBMD for a Hooper/Statton marriage, we have only one:

Jun 1901
Devonport 5b 760
Amelia Hooper to possibly Charles Statton

As it happens, the above William R and Rebecca did have a daughter Amelia born ca. 1878 Bereferris (she's in service in 1901) so I'm speculating that Flora was in fact their granddaughter rather than their daughter, born illegitimately to Amelia (and maybe or maybe not, Charles Statton)

If you play around with the 1911 census index a bit, you might discover, in Devonport district, a household comprising an Amelia Statton age 33 and her daughter Flora Hooper, as well as 2 other girls, Minnie Statton age 8 and Ivy Jessie Statton age 4

Just for the record, the 1891 census shows 7 siblings for Harry (although the oldest might have been a half sibling) - shout if you want the census details

What a wonderful piece of deduction and research, Tati. 
Yes, it all fits very nicely and makes sense, and fits with all other data found so far.
My friend will be delighted and very grateful. 
And I can see several new leads opening up for me to investigate further 

I can access UK Census data here from the local library, so only send Harry's siblings if it is no trouble.
