Hi Donna,

I'm not sure that Kaiapoi has ever had its own newspaper, I've certainly never seen reference to one at the Christchurch Library. The Christchurch Press and Star cover the area but only the Star is on line, however it stops in 1909. Any death notices are likely to be in either of those two publications but some kind fairy would need to search the microfilmed copies for you.

Cheers

Pishaw - of course Kaiapoi had its own newspapers,  The Kaiapoi Record for one and other papers that covered North Canterbury (The Rangiora Standard, The NC Guardian, The Oxford and Cust Observer, The Recorder and The NC Gazette).  Nowadays the region is served by the Northern Outlock and the NC News.

My mother wrote the history of Kaiapoi, and she says even finding paper copies of these are difficult.  They are split between the Canterbury, Kaiapoi and Rangiora Museums, the Christchurch City and Waimakariri District libraries and private collections.  Unfortunately none of these are on line, nor does there seem to be any great drive to put them up.

Hi Wayne,

I would be greatful if you were able to look up the death notices, thank you so much.  I look forward in hearing what is in them.  Keen to know of the children's names hopefully in the notices.

Thanks also for the death information, you have been very helpful

It's always worthwhile too, to  check the National Library catalogue of newspaper holdings.

[e.g. The "Kaiapoi Record" is available on microfilm - July 1909 to July 1915 : ]

Hi Donna

That's very kind of Wayne to offer the newspaper look-ups.

In the event that nothing is found in the "Press" (Christchurch), let me know and I'll check out the "Kaiapoi Record" for you.

[Perhaps I should just add, that early death notices (of the era you are wanting), most usually only mentioned the name of the spouse (deceased or surviving)  ... that is to say, the names of their children, weren't included (except perhaps on rare occasions).  The other factor is that, not everyone, had their death notified in a newspaper  ... it cost several shillings for an advertisment ....  an awful lot of money in the old days.]  :)

Hi Donna

Have looked up the Christchurch Press for the death notices and only found one--

Ch Press 3rd Sept 1910 Death Notice

FRASER On 2 Sept 1910 at her residence Akaroa Street, Kaiapoi Effie dearly beloved wife of Angus, age 74 years.

Couldn't find Angus's death notice.
Also there was no obituary for Angus or Effie in the Press.
I didnot have time to check anyother papers ie the Christchurch Star which was he evening paper in Christchurch.

I checked the 1905 Kaiapoi Electoral Roll Angus & Effie were the only FRASER's living in Kaiapoi.
Also checked archways there is no probate or intestate for either.
Later in the week I can check at the Christchurch Museum Library to see what they hold

Hope this has been a little help.

Regards Wayne
