Hi Kate,
Thanks very much for offering to share your information with me. Of course I'll share anything I have with you, photo's, certificates and alike. I see your surname is Woods too. Which brother do you descend from? My fathers family is pretty big, with all his brothers, cousins and their children there are LOTS of Woods around Bargeddie/Coatbridge. Are you from Scotland or are you further afield?

My email address is (*)

Best Wishes
Tom

Hello there,

I know this is a long shot since this thread has not been active in quite some time but I hope you may check this in the near future. Bernard and Margaret are my great-great-great-grandparents. I don't know anything about them except what I find on census records. I'm a descendant of his son, Thomas. I'd love to know more about the family. Hope this reaches you soon!

Best regards,
Andrea

Can't find the marriage of James Woods and Mary Hanratty, but I can see other children for a couple with those names, if the OP has found them since their last post well and good, in case not...

Newry RC parish, 12 October 1838, Peter of James Woods and Mary Hanratty, Sponsors Bernard Hanratty and Eliza Grant (right page, 12th entry up from bottom):

Newry RC parish, 24 September 1856, Teresa of James Woods and Mary Hanratty, Sponsors David Magherall and Mary Cunningham (right page, 10th entry down from top):

Clonallon RC parish, 3 January 1864, Margaret of James Woods and Mary Hanratty, Sponsors James McConvill and Mary Woods (right page, about halfway down):

And for the information of the most recent poster, here is: (1) the Newry RC parish baptism for  Bernard of James Woods and Mary Hanratty, 8 April 1849, Sponsors James Maginn and Ann Woods (left page, just above halfway down page); and (2) the Newry RC parish register entry for the marriage of  Bernard Woods and Margaret Grant on 9 November 1870, witnessed by Patrick Barry and Rosanne Hanratty (right page, 7th entry down from top of page):

(2) http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633290#page/142/mode/1up (marriage)

Thanks for all the information Kate and Gaffy. Irish records are so hard to locate, so thanks for the trouble!

I'm in Canada. My great-grandmother Lena, Thomas and Mary Ann's second born, immigrated by herself when she was 17 in the late 20's with the Catholic Woman's League (I have no idea what that means). She never spoke about her family or life in Scotland so we think there might have been a falling out (she had a child when she was 16). In 1960 my grandfather, Andrew, was posted to Germany and before they went they visited Edinburgh where Mary Ann was living. My grandfather was shocked to find out that they were Catholic. Lena had been pretending to be Presbyterian and the family had given him a very hard time for converting to Catholicism to marry my grandmother. He never confronted her.

Whenever you come across any other information I'd love to know more! Thanks so much for replying!

Best regards,
Andrea

Hi AndreaRose,
I'm sure Bernard's father James came to Scotland from Ireland to live with him as he is listed in 1881 census, although I have not found a death certificate as of yet, so he may have went back to Ireland.
Here is the death registrations for Bernard and Margaret and also the marriage of Thomas and Mary Ann.

best regards
kate

You are only allowed to post a small portion of certificates for deciphering purposes but you are allowed to transcribe the details.
