John Arthur Greig
« on: Monday 16 March 09 07:54 GMT (UK) »
John was born in the Lambeth district in 1870. In 1895 he was a Hotel manager at 42 Shacklewell Lane, Kingsland(Dalston) London. What happened to him after that? Help!

On freebmd he seems to be listed as "John Arthur B Greig" at birth - any idea what that "B" stands for?
Have you worked out who his parents were?

hmmmmm , maybe not   ::)

anyway, pretty straightforward on earlier census:-

1891 Barman in Hammersmith (transcribed aged 24, but clearly 21)

1881 with parents Samuel & Euphemia in Lambeth / Waterloo Rd 2nd district.in

Euphemia is probably not his mother - I found a 1878 marriage for her and Samuel.
Possibly Samuel Greig m. Hannah Smith in 1853 Newington district, Hannah Greig d. 1874 aged 41, Lambeth district.

In 1871 they are listed as "Grey".  John A. B., aged 1.
There is also a brother Robert B, whose middle name is Bennington from freebmd.

So plenty of possibilities here - he could have had family in Scotland on his father's side, he could have emigrated, he could have changed his name.  If you trace his brothers and sisters you might find one who emigrated and then you can look to see if John followed them. Or if any 'niece' 'nephew' 'grandson' 'granddaughter' 'cousin' etc. turns up with other parts of the family who might be one of John's children.

Wow! What a response.
Jorose thanks for all that. I've searched the shipping lists to see if he went to Australia/USA/canada, but couldn't find anything. I'll follow up your other suggestions. The 'B' may stand for Bennington as well. Some family connection?

Laird of Kings Lynn. The info came from a birth certificate. He fathered a child , Vera Lilian Greig, by Hester Louise Holland in 1895. vera died in a mental hospital in 1921. I can't find a marriage certificate.

In 1901 Hester is working as a barmaid in Clerkenwell Road, London, she gives her age as 26(she was born in 1871) spinster. In 1903 she married Walter Benjamin Groves as Hester L Greig widow(Can't find a death for John Arthur Greig) formerly Holland.

Lizdb, I think the above may answer your question.
