(NB - Bristol is not a county!)

Just me being a little pedantic but actually Bristol was granted county status in 1373!

It is generally, for our purposes, taken to be in Gloucestershire (bits north of the river) and Somerset (bits south of the river).

Thought you might like to know that!  When I was a child, the signs said "City and County of Bristol" - they took them down when they invented the new "county" of Avon - since abolished (hurrah!)

;)

This helped a lot  now I get why it said Bristol on his marriage certificate we change areas a lot  here in Canada as well so it can be hard to find what you looking for when your searching so something like this helps.

Thanks again

I quite agree with you Arranroots.  At school we had exercise books with a map on the back showing a 50 mile radius around the City and County of Bristol.

My mother has a very old book which tells of the granting of this status.

I think they should give it back to Bristol, but am glad they abolished the Avon title, I was never comfortable with it.
