Aberdeen Industrial School Skene Square
« on: Saturday 14 March 09 15:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi I think I have found a  g grandparent in Aberdeen Industrial School - skene square in 1871 aged 9 - I have found a couple of links to Industrial Schools generally and am wondering what he did to earn his place! Does anyone know if there are archives for this school available anywhere so I can try and find some more details ?

thanks

Hi There and welcome to Rootschat.

My husbands grandmother was at one of the Industrial schools in Aberdeen and it was more of a 'poorhouse' for orphaned or destitute children if I am right.
If I am wrong I am sure that someone will correct me.

In industrial schools pupils were given three meals a day in exchange for 4 hours of lessons and several hours of work.  The intention being to attempt to reduce the amount of children begging or stealing on the city streets.

It might be worth contacting either www.anesfhs.org.uk for advice on records for the school or the City Archives at www.aberdeencity.gov.uk.  Either may be able to offer some assistance.

Thanks for all that - part of my reason for thinking something must have caused him to be there is that he had a lot of family around to look after him (mainly in far off Peterhead) although his dad died when he was a baby and his step dad when he was 6 so life cant have been easy - I had been thinking of joining the anefhs so this will spur me on
