Dear Tomkin  :)

I have suggested that you send a sample file to me so that I can examine it on my widescreen monitor to see if it's your monitor or your software  :)

I think we had this problem before with some restorers having different colour profiles. I don't think it was resolved.

My super-dooper monitor gives pretty accurate colours (checked against Pels' monitor profile ) but my laptop is high on the blues and low on the reds. I've also noticed that some people's images that look blue on the laptop are actually a lurid shade of purple when viewed on highest quality settings of my main monitor.

I'm not sure how we can all callibrate to all get the same colour though*  :-\

Hello,

Monitor calibration.

This is good: -

http://www.normankoren.com/makingfineprints1A.html

Maybe better for LCD screens: -

http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/

Adobe Gamma might not do the job.

There are free calibration wizards: -

Always make a restore point of course if using a software product.

Other items... Check your monitor connections for bent pins and looseness. Also the seating of a graphics card in the motherboard. Reload graphics card drivers.

George
Scan at 300 plus for restores please. Scan at larger dpi for small photos. Don't forget to crop the scanner bed out! (Them's the white bits)
Please feel free to alter any work by me for the benefit of the Poster.

 Thanks a lot George.

One of my "oldies" for your collection,

 http://www.photoscientia.co.uk/Gamma.htm

I've located the problem. It's actually in my Adobe Elements software.

        The warning message I get seems to be nonsensical ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

Could I just get on to one of my hobby horses while we're talking technical  :)

Pat/Barbara Mary ~

If you see the enlargement of your head that Tomkin put up you will see a very strong checkered pattern. This is a sign of high jpg compression and makes it difficult for a good restore. To get around it,we have to use filters or use a lot of hand smoothing. It is also wearing on the eyes  :'( :'( :'(

It's possible to avoid this by making sure that you save it as a 'high quality-best' image when you have scanned it.

Prue has put information about this here:
