Charles Benfield
« on: Thursday 12 March 09 16:42 GMT (UK) »
Hey all,
any help with this would be appreciated.

Henry Benfield b1844 in Basingstoke Hants. married Eliza Oakley b1854 in Portsea Hants 1872.
The year before his marriage, Henry appears on the 1871 census as a private in portsea.

On his marriage certificate it gives his residence as Wish Lane portsmouth, the same as Eliza.

His fathers name is Charles Benfield, occupation Brewer.
I have no idea of Henrys mothers name or whether he had siblings.
I can't find anything definate that puts a Charles Benfield and son Henry b1844 basingstoke together on any census.

Can anyone help?
am I missing something obvious?

Regards Sandra

He's lodging in Winchester in 1861 - a Private in the Militia - consistant with his PoB and pretty good with DoB.

1861 - RG9; Piece: 693; Folio: 31; Page: 19 - Winchester, St Michael

I suspect:-

 - either illegitimate and fabricated Father or Fathers occupation on marriage.
 - hopelessly mistranned in 1851, altho Judy's find also caught my eye earlier ....

Given that there is no obvious Birth Index entry for the surname variations, I wonder ?

Births Mar 1843

Binfield  Charles     Basingstoke  v7 p44

~~~~~~~~
Births Jun 1843
BINFIELD  Charles     Basingstoke  7 59
Births Mar 1845
BINFIELD  Charles     Basingstoke  v7 p62
Hey all, Thankyou all for looking and for your suggestions.
Very much appreciated.
A new train of thought always throws something new into the pot.
I have spent the past 48hours going round and round in circles again with this one.
Henry and his father Charles Benfield/Binfield/Banfield/Bonfield bloomin pain in the backside field lol!
I came to a grinding halt about 4 or 5 months ago with them and kind of laid them to rest.
Someone contacted me a few days ago with a connection to Henry and Charles and indeed had Charles at the top of their tree as Binfield married to Sophia Harding 1839.
I looked up the marriage and trawled through the census records again hoping to find a Sophia with either Henry or Charles. I did find a 65 yr old Sophia Harding with a 6yr old Henfy Binfield in 1851 which confused me even more.  but still cannot find any concrete proof that Charles Binfield is Henry Binfield Father, or even whether Henry Binfield is my Henry Benfield.
I fear I shall go around in circles forever more with this pair...
I have just gone back and had another look at the Sophia Harding  age 65 with Henry Binfield.
It is 1841 not 51. and he is 6 months not 6 yrs.
anyway they are right at the top of the page.
HO 107/385/4
on the previous page sitting at the bottom are Charles and Sophia Binfield both age 20. all from and in Basingstoke.
That still doesnt make 6month old Henry Binfield the Henry Benfield I am searching for though arghhhh! :-\
If it's any help, Henry Binfield, son of Charles & Sophia Binfield, was baptised in Cliddesden 13 Dec 1840.
Do you suppose he lied about his age?
Hey Nell, Nice to see you again.
It is possible he lied about age for any number of reasons...or maybe he didn't know for certain how old he was.
looking through the death records I found;  :'(
Sophia Harding c1775 - June 1846
Sophia Binfield  c1821 - Sept 1846
Charles Binfield c1821 - June 1847
all Basingstoke
If those are his Parents and Grandma or grt Gran even, then young Henry would have been an orphan at/around the age of 6yrs.
That might explain why There is no mention of him anywhere as far as I can see untill he pops up in Winchester barracks around the age of 17-20 ?
I suppose it could also explain the surname variant....again though it all seems a bit tenuous.
Also Judi and Laird mention a 10yr old Henry Binfield with Father Charles in 1851?  ???
(unless of course the Charles that died 1847 wasn't his father but a different Charles, thus leaving the two of them to go visiting the Taylors in 1851) (maybe Ann Taylor was his sister?
I will have a delve for an Ann Binfield.
Hmm - maybe need to document all possibilities :-\
Sophia Harding baptised 20 Jan 1821 Cliddesden, parents John & Sophia.
Typical - two possible candidates for Charles!
Charles baptised 17 Jan 1813 in Herriard, parents James & Hannah
Charles baptised 31 Oct 1819 in Bentworth, parents John & Martha.
Only the marriage certificate to Sophia Harding in 1839 might sort that one out.
