My name is William Quegan, and I live in the midwest USA. My paternal grandfather was Richard Joseph Quegan, born March 1893 near Birr. I know his father's name was William, and I believe his mother's maiden name was Kerwin. He emigrated to the States in 1927 through Ellis Island and the ship Leviathan from Southampton England, and resided in Stamford Ct. for pretty much the rest of his life. He passed away in 1976. He married Hannah Lehane from Cork and they had 4 children (2 still alive), including my father Richard Joseph Quegan Jr. He had at least 2 brothers, Bill and Jack, and I think one named Mick (who all remained in Ireland) and 2 sisters who came to this country as well, and whom I knew as "Sis" Conway and Molly Corrigan; they both lived in the greater New York City area. He has seven grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren spread around the country.

My great grandmother was Maryann Quegan, born 1869 in Birr.  She came to America in 1888, married Thomas Claffy (also from Birr), and had six children, one of which is my grandmother Loretta.  To the poster who mentioned Sis and Molly, I knew them, as we all lived in the Bronx and they cousins to my grandmother and aunts and uncles.   I would be interested in a family reunion of the Quegans, if one comes up again.

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone reads this thread anymore. My gggrandfather was William Quegan born about 1816. Married Sarah Flanagon. I dont have any information on Sarah.
Children include:
William b: 1867 m: Elizabeth (identified in seanmac's post)
Vincent b: 1869 m: Margaret (nee Hickey) in New Zealand (my ggrandfather and mother) Surname spelt Quigan.
Agnes - emmigrated to USA approx 1903ish
James b: 1871 - emmigrated to USA
Mary
Teresa b: 1873 m: Tom Barnwell

I was wondering if anyone has any more information on William and Sarah, or any of the family that might help fill some gaps in our family tree.

Here is an exchange years ago with Gavin Quigan from New Zealand.  Looks like you share grandparents:

Found your name on "irish millennium family register. Have identified that my
grandfather was born in Ireland 22/1/1869 at Birr, Offaly name was Vincent Maurice
Quegan. Changed spelling of surname to Quigan when emigrated to New Zealand early
1900's. Had a brothers named William and James and sisters named Mary, Teresa and
Agnes. Parents named William Quegan who married Sarah Flanagan. James and Agnes
emigrated to USA.
Was wondering if there may be a family tie up given similarity in spelling of surname
and Offaly connection. Town of Derinduff also features in my research to date.

Thankyou for your message.

I have pretty much got all the family as mentioned in the post. Vincent Maurice Quigan is my g-grandfather. I have seen Gavins name in the family tree.

The family sort of fractures and becomes difficult to trace.

I also understand that in the Griffiths land report there is mention of another Quegan, possible William's brother, but I never wrote down the details.

What avenues have you taken to search for the Quegan's in Ireland? I am sort of new at this, but have found reading some of these threads to be very helpful.

Do you have any information on James and Agnes who emigrated to America?
