Between the Censuses
« on: Wednesday 11 March 09 14:52 GMT (UK) »
Just a quick question  ;D

I am trying to trace an ancestor's movements between the 1881 and 1891 censuses. I have looked at Electoral Registers, Rating Valuation Books and School Admission Books at the local Record Office, without much success.  ???

Can anyone suggest any other sources of information, which may be of use to me.

Many thanks

Depending on what age they are during this time -

Addresses on birth/death certs of children.
Being mentioned in Will, or being executor at time of proving of a will, of a parent or other relation.
Address given on Marriage cert

Sometimes it is hard to actively search for anything, but as you research wider members of the family something can suddenly pop up!

Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Have you tried looking through trade directories? Many are available online (although I can't remember the address, maybe someone else can post it for me).

http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/findbylocation.asp

The on line postal directories (re-named historical one on-line ;D Are also available in each county in the reference room of the main library. I use the them for doing the same tracking folk down between the census.I use the library though it quicker ;D

Hi to you all and thanks for replying.

I have posted specific details on other threads, so don't want to duplicate too much here. My grandfather, according to the 1891 & 1901 censuses was born in Thame, Oxon in 1887. His father, was released from the Navy in 1883 from Portsmouth and was living with his family in Gloucester in 1891. The birth appears to have never been recorded. The mother, whose maiden name I do not know was apparently born in Chalvey, Bucks.

I am trying to establish the movements of my G Grandfather from 1883 to 1891 and my Grandfather from 1891 to 1901. Unfortunately, according to the 1891 census, my G Grandfather was a Hawker, so there is little chance of him being listed in either the trade directories or in a will.

Thanks again for responding, much appreciated.
