Help Diddy or Gadget!!
« on: Wednesday 11 March 09 14:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi Diddy & Gadget my grandad was David Rintoul Gregor Berry (born 24/11/1884 Whitefield, Cargill, Perthshire). His parents were Alexander Berry (20/2/1855, Ferryport on Craig; died 1936 Laurelbank Cargill, Perth) and Ann Wilkie Innes (b 1853 Kirriemuir, Forfar; died 1934 Burrelton, Cargill, Perth).
I can't find a reason for my grandfather's middle names being 'Rintoul Gregor'. There doesn't seem to be anyone of that name in the family.
The only Rintoul/Gregors I found were: death of a Mary Gregor Rintoul 1871 daughter of Alexander Rintoul; but can find no connection.
Any suggestions as to why he would have these names?

Hi Sandra  :)

Are those names from his birth/marriage/death registrations?

Have you traced the family of Alexander Berry and Ann Innes?

There could be lots of reasons - named for direct ancestors of parents or some member(s) of the wider kin group or even a prominent person in the locality.

The names could be for two people as well.

I'll do a bit of scouting around on the 1881 census and other bmd records.

Hi
My info is from Scotland's People: 1881 census W Whitfield Fm Cott Cargill; 1891 census W Kinnochtry Cott, Scone, Cargill. Alexander was a grieve Ann was a farm grieve's wife.
The Mary Rintoul I found was 1871 death (Scotland's People) Trinity Gask Perth - father Alexander (farmer) I had wondered if my Alexander worked for a Gregor Rintoul. Or if Rintoul was a place?

Alexander's parents were Archibald Berrie b 19/11/1817 Ferryport on Craig; and Margaret Wilson 22/12/1818 St Andrews

Ann's parents were: David Innes (a ploughman) and Jessie Wilkie.

Thanks for helping.

I've found via a Google search a John Rintoul McGregor b. 16 June 1852, Blairgowrie  ( http://www.incallander.co.uk/mcgregor-gen.htm )

Not sure if there is any connection there.

It might be worth folowing him up.

Added - Rintoul is definitely a surname - a quick search on the IGI has 200+ hits in Perthshire alone

Looks like it's also a place in Orwell, Kinrossshire:

Wow! I may have Rob Roy as an ancestor!!!!
Seriously though, I was thinking 'prominent person' that may have been a benefactor. DRG Berry's father, Alexander goes from 'farm servant'/'grieve' to 'inn-keeper'. It seems a big leap. I don't know which inn it was round Burrelton/Cargill, but know DRG Berry eventually relocated to Edinburgh where he owned a pub in the High Street.
Thanks

Hi Sandra
I hope you are still reading these posts. I've just read yours while searching for my family. My great grandparents were also Ann Wilkie Innes and Alexander Berry. Their gravestone is in Cargill Churchyard in Perthshire. They are buried along with their three daughters: Ann (died 1954), Helen (died 1956) and Maggie (died 1969). They had another daughter, Jean or Jeannie who was my grandmother, who died in 1932, when my Dad (Peter Smith Methven) was 20 and his younger brother (Alexander Berry Methven) was about 16. I can remember visiting Great Aunt Maggie at Cedarlea, Woodside (Burrleton) as a child, but didn't know any of the other siblings. I didn't know about your grandfather. My father died many years ago and my uncle Sandy was killed in the war before I was born. I'm an only child, so the only descendent from this branch of the family.
Your postings have added a lot to my family tree as I've only just started searching. Many thanks!
