We have the birth certificate for a


Catherine taaffe born july 1904, Newcastle

Parents

Francis Taffe and Elizabeth O,Neill.

On the birth certifcate she was born 11 Elswick East Terrace, Newcastle.

Francis was a Metal Dresser.

I have found a marriage for Francis and Elizabeth in 1896 Newcastle.

But cannot find them on the 1901 census?
Any help with dates,parents? siblings ? etc

I take it that 1871 census they must have been in ireland?
And perhaps married in ireland?

You'd need to find out Catherine's maiden name to tell for sure (off one of the children's birth certs)

Sorry, I don't know anything about Irish research at all (but for some reason I have a  feeling birthplace 'Ireland' won't be much help  )

Dizzy,

 The English census enumerators were only required to complete the "Where Born" column with "Ireland" , without entering an Irish county. ( ditto for Scotland)

 However some enumerators squeezed in a county ( if you are lucky) So you should try to trace their record on every census that they would have appeared on.

Also a bit of research via Google will tell you if the Irish surname is heavily rooted in a particular county ( as long as it isn't a name like Murphy, Gallagher etc)

In the 1850/60s many Newcastle's Irish immigrants were from the north-west counties of Mayo, Sligo, Roscommon etc.
