Thomas Ward death after 1890

My great grandfather Thomas ward was born in Exbourne, Devon 1848, married Elizabeth Dart (1849 Sampford Courtney, Devon) in Cardiff 1874 had children Frederick 1887 Maidenhead, Berks then James 1881, Bristol and also 2 younger daughters Polly and Annie whose dates of birth I am unsure of.
By 1901 Elizabeth, James and the girls (now married) were in Exeter but I can find no further information for father Thomas and Fred, though there is a death of a 14 year old Fred on FreeBMD.

I would be grateful for any information on any of these ancestors.

I started a new thread as there were quite a few anomalies on my previous ones. I am now sure that my grandfather James Ward was born in Bristol 1881 to parents Thomas Ward (1848 Exbourne) and Elizabeth Dart (1850 Sourton) and had an older brother Frederick (1877 Maidenhead Berks). Thomas and Elizabeth married 1874 Cardiff and Elizabeth and son James were in Exeter in 1901 but I do not know what happened to Frederick and father Thomas, although a Frederick Ward (14) died in Bristol 1890 (Free BMD)
I have now realised that Thomas' parents were in fact Thomas Ward and Ann Paddon who married in 1848 (free BMD) but I am having difficulty in finding their dates and places of birth as there are several Thomas Ward's born in Devon but 1817 Exbourne looks hopeful. Similarly there are many Ann Paddon's with 1819 Exbourne again looking hopeful. I do not know if Thomas senior had siblings.
Also James definitely had younger sisters known as Polly and Annie who married in Exeter to become Stevens and Carroll respectively but I am unsure of their dates of birth which I presume were in Bristol.
Any help with these queries would be greatly appreciated.

Can you post any census details you already have please?  Dealing with the sisters - how d you know they exist, do you already have the censuses (saves us looking if you have)

Regarding Thomas (James' father) when was the last time you know he was alive?  Is he mentioned on James's marriage certificate at all?

Sorry to keep asking questions, but it saves wild goose chases - just let us know what documents you have and meanwhile I'll have a look for you.

So you seem to be looking at a death for Thomas between 1892 and 1901, probably in either Exeter or Bristol.

My mother Florence Dykes (nee Ward) remembers both aunts who were known as Polly and Annie but we do not know their dob. The 1891 census shows Ann 4 & Mary 2 whereas the 1901 census shows Mary 12 and Lucy 8. Assuming that Ann 14 was in a reformatory then and that Mary was also known as Polly what happened to Lucy? Its all very confusing!

The 1911 census lists James 28 and Elizabeth 60 at Preston St and I am in posession of a photograph taken in the early 1920's of Elizabeth, James and a young child taken ( probably his son Tom 1921 Exeter) at the same address, but my grandmother Emily Ward 21  (nee Salter) and son Reginald 4 mths were at 31 West St.

I presume this Elizabeth is James' natural mother as the age approx. agrees with the dob of Elizabeth Dart 1849. Perhaps the age of 30 in the 1891 census was a mistake or maybe they divorced and he did marry another Elizabeth. I also think the Stourton Glos. in the 1901 census is an error as she was from Sourton, Devon according to the 1871 census but of course moved to Bristol Glos. after Frederick was born.

I'll keep searching and if necessary purchase the relevant certificates! Thanks again,

I have recently resumed my family tree research and found a few anomalies. It appears that the Thomas Ward 1848 Exbourne whom I had as the father of James 1881 Bristol is incorrect and James' father may have been born c 1844 and was the son of John 1803 and Mary Ann 1799, who also had older children John 1826, Elizabeth 1828, Mary Ann 1831, Jane 1833, Ann 1836, Harriet 1841 and Thomas c 1844 (as seen on the census for Exbourne in 1841 and 1861). I cannot find any birth record for Thomas in 1844 although FreeBMD shows Thomas's born in the Okehampton area in 1840, 1842, 1843 and 1848. Also there is no mention of Mary Ann in the 1861 census entry for Exbourne where John is listed at 7 Village age 58 with Thomas 17 but there is a Mary A in Stoke Damerel and a death of a Mary Ann in 1862 so perhaps she was in hospital. If anyone can throw any more light on any of this and/or find the parents of John Ward 1903 I would be very grateful.
