Dwelly's Parish Records vol 2
« on: Tuesday 10 March 09 20:31 GMT (UK) »
I read online that the above book has the records for Thorne St. Margaret, Wellington.
Seeing as Somerset Record Office has said that the records are lost, has anyone got this book and will it be worth me getting it for the records I need.

Thanks
Jeanne

Dwelly's Parish records are taken from Bishops Transcripts and are patchy at best.  They are best used for double checking the actual parish registers to spot variations on spellings and some entries missed from the registers.  I have Dwelly's volumes on disk.  If you say what information you are interested in, I'll look for you.  Don't spend money without knowing whether it is worth it!

Thank you GAJ. I have a marriage for John Babbage and Joan Mildon 1751 Thorn St. Margarets, Wellington. I would like to know if John Babbage brn 1754 is one of their children. I think its the baptism records that are missing, would be lovely if Dwelly had some of them.

Thanks again

Sorry to disappoint.  Dwelly's has only four entries for Thorne all dated 1609.  As the early parish registers have been lost, you may have to look for more indirect evidence such as leases.  In this area leases were often granted for lives and members of the family other than the lessee are quoted.

Thank you very much for having a look for me GAJ. It was only a slim chance to begin with.
If you have time, can you tell me how I can go about finding the leases please? I never thought of this way so have never done it.

Thank you
Jeanne
