Hi Jane - Info much appreciated.  That means that Harriet is the sister of Edward's wife!  Also looks as though the whole family were mariners.  Their absence from the census (Yes - I'm able to have access, thanks) presumably is because the men were at sea, though I'd imagined there would have been a census for seafarers?  C

I am a descendent of Samuel Woolcock, so was very interested to read the Woolcock / Gambrill discussion.

Samuel Woolcock married Harriet Bailey 29 Aug 1853.  The marriage certificate confirms a number of comments in the discussion:
Samuel Woolcock mariner, father James Woolcock mariner.
Harriett Bailey, father Daniel Bailey labourer.
A Mary Brayley is one of the witnesses.  (Bailey – Bayley – Brayley ?)

I would be interested to know Samuel’s other siblings (ie. James Woolcock and Sarah Gambrill’s children).  From the discussion trail and my limited research:
?? 1818-
Samuel Woolcock abt 1825-1898
Edward Woolcock 1827-
William Woolcock 1829-1934

However like you, I have found Samuel’s father James Woolcock to be pretty elusive.  I would also be interested to know if you made any progress confirming James birth, marriage, and death dates and any other life details?

Certainly the Cornwall link seems likely at some point in the past, given the name is far more frequent in Cornwall than Kent, as well as the fact the family are all mariners.

But perhaps this happened further in the past.  Parish records on Ancestry note a marriage licence for Jas Woolcock and Jane Robinson both of St Marys Dover dated 8 Apr 1761.

Also the comments on Woolcocks in the workhouse is also something I was not aware of. But I since spotted this on the website www.doverhistory.co.uk/workhouse/vestryminutes :

30 Jun 1836 That Mr Boyce provides the boy Woolcock with a pair of shoes.

Any comments most welcome!
Many thanks.

Yes, definitely same woolcocks, that tree is a great help especially for the gambrills. I will look more closely, but already I see james woolcock is still somewhat of a mystery, and the woolcocks and baileys are very intertwined! Have you followed up on the workhouse records? I have only registered on roots today, so apparently I need to make 3 posts and then I can send a personal message with my details. Many thanks, Neil.

Hi Neil

To be honest, I only was active when I put those details on, along with my sister-in-law - it's our husbands who are the Woolcocks.  We'd be delighted to join with you in joining up the trees.  It's some time since I worked on this tree but I know I've been given some good links to parish records in the Dover region, so will look them out tomorrow and send to you.  I also must get to Dover to go through records there because I've found the Record Offices to be really helpful.  Will send more details tomorrow.

Regards - Chris Woolcock

Samuel Woolcock and Harriett Bailey, their son James Woolcock, and in turn their grand daughter Emily May Woolcock remained in Dover.  Emily married Edward Francis whence they moved to North Woolwich and the family spread from there.  I think have three posts now so should be able to send you a personal message.  Neil.
