WOOLCOCK/GAMBRILL - Dover St Mary's
« on: Tuesday 10 March 09 15:44 GMT (UK) »
Looking for information about James Woolcock who married Sarah Gambrill in Dover area, children being born 1818 onwards and baptised in Dover St Mary's.

Seeking his baptism, marriage and death plus any relevant mariner records; also Will.

Would be grateful to know where records can be viewed/bought on cd.

Many thanks.

Hi Jane

Many thanks for your quick response.  James was a mariner according to his children's baptisms, so that was from 1818 onwards.  His last child, William, was baptised 30.10.1829 but died in the workhouse in 1834, just seven months after James's wife, Sarah died there ... so I think James must have died sometime after 1829.

That just gives a time span of 1818-1829 ... but not knowing his age, I can't tell how long before then he was a mariner.

Sarah Gambrill came from Nonington, so it's possible they were married there rather than St Mary's and I suppose it's also possible there were children in that area before the ones I've found in St Mary's.   Sarah was born 4.3.1786 so I'm tempted to think that she started her family before the age of 32.

Any pointers you can give me with be much appreciated.

Chris

That is so kind of you.   I'm convinced that there must be a connection to Devon/Cornwall at some stage, which could be the link - and certainly he hasn't turned up on any of the Kent census, so I think I'll go through those for Tavistock to see if this one could be the same.  (Hopefully he didn't just run off and leave his wife and children!!)  Chris

The nearest I can see for anyone apart from Edward is a possible for Samuel in the 1861 Cencus..I cant see him in either 1851 or 1841 but given he was a mariner he could have been away at sea

Im not sure if you have access to cencus..but here is the ref No but if you wish me to post full details please just ask

Indexed as Wolcock

RG9/548-Folio 17/Page 25

Jane

I can also see this same Samuel in the 1871 and 1881 cencus.

I think Samuel married Harriet Bayley in 1853-Dover

Although Samuel Woolcock is on the page Harriet is missing of it but in 1861 there is a Charlotte Bayley living with them who according to the 1851 is her mother
