Whitby photographs
« on: Monday 09 March 09 20:12 GMT (UK) »
I was delighted to read in the Whitby Gazette that a couple of hundred  of Frank Meadow Sutcliffe's so far unpublished photographs have been found, digitised and are available on the Sutcliffe Gallery website - http://www.sutcliffe-gallery.co.uk/

If, like me, your ancestors are from Whitby, you might find the photographs of great interest.  Sadly though, none of the photographs on the website bear titles, so if you are looking for a specific ancestor you may well be out of luck (unless of course you know what they looked like!)

That is an excellent site, and the photos of the Fisher People are really interesting - I've been into the gallery in Whitby, love those old photographs

I'm sure a lot of people will be very pleased that you've posted this link

Barbara, every time I go back "up north" to visit my mum in Middlesbrough, I make a point of going to Whitby and the Sutcliffe Gallery.   I think my next visit may well take a lot longer than previous ones though - some of those photographs are simply awesome and I hope that they have some with names on.  I would dearly love to find a photograph of my ancestors in there!

Hi Sheila,

Just wanted to say thankyou so much for the link to Sutcliffe Gallery.  Went there myself a couple of years ago when over from Australia.   His work is absolutely fantastic.  Have some hanging in my house.   Like you I would love some names.

Good heavens Val - you didn't need to come all that way to see a Sutcliffe Gallery!   Have you seen the Australian site?   http://www.sutcliffegallery.com.au/gallery.html

Wow Sheila, had no idea there was an Australian site.  Have just spent an hour looking through it, feeling really homesick for Whitby, such a unique place.

Interestingly a lot of the people in the photographs have names put to them.   None of mine though.   Must get back there one day.

Whitby is indeed a unique place.  I love going back there, to my roots - which are well and truly anchored in Whitby!

Thank you for those links?  What fantastic photographs!

The Australian ones I enjoyed because they had captions on so at least you can tell what street they \re and even some names and technicalities.

Best wishes

Wasn't he just the most amazing photographer? And so much of Whitby still looks just as it did then.

Great site, thanks,

Jen
