Finding 'Aunt Mary'
« on: Monday 09 March 09 16:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi Folks

This is a bit of a long shot but I thought I'd leave a posting as someone might come across it who might be able to help.

This photo was found among the possessions of my grandmother's sister MARY McAULEY who lived with her mothers family in Antrim from where both my Great-Grandmother MARY FLEMING and Great-Grandfather PATRICK McAULEY (alias MACAULEY) originated.

On the back were three lines of text:
To Mary From Aunt Mary Canada
          91 ys Sept 12th 1952
          Taken on Mothers Day

As it was sent to my grandmother's sister and she addresses herself as "Aunt Mary" (and none of the Fleming family knew anything about who it was), it would seem to confirm my impression that she is related to my Great-Grandfather Patrick McAULEY - either a sister or sister-in-law.

So Aunt Mary was born c1861.  What were Patrick's parents names in case she is a sister and there is a marriage for Mary.

Hi Karen

His Fathers name was JAMES. I don't know what his mothers name was. James was born c1830. Patrick was born c1871. When the LDS put the Civil Registration Indexes online recently I found a possible match listed for a Patrick McAuly Ballycastle 1870 but havent been able to check it out.

I know that Patrick and his father James where blacksmiths and worked on the Masserene estate before Patrick moved to Belfast when he got married.

I am presuming 'Aunt' Mary was a McAuley by the personal nature of the photo and given the age she could possibly be Patrick's older sister. My grandmothers sister Mary stayed with her mothers family in Antrim while the rest of the family lived in Belfast so could have known more of Patricks family there.

Not knowing anything about the way Canadian records are organised I thought I would appeal for help.

Sadly I would think that Mary would not have lived much longer and would have passed on sometime in the years after the photo was taken. Certainly looking at the cards in the photo she had several children and grandchildren.

Presumably if the photograph was taken on Mothers Day which in Canada I think is 2nd Sunday in May and her birthday was in Sept the photo was taken 10 May 1953.
