Railway Death
« on: Monday 09 March 09 15:55 GMT (UK) »
Dear All,

I have a possible ancestor, James Wilkie, who was killed in a railway accident.  He was a railway labourer and his death extract states that death was instantaneous - a railway engine having driven over the body.  The accident took place at the Bridge of Dun railway yard in 1858.

Where could I find out more details?

I want to confirm his wife or children's names - the death extract only states he was married.

He was buried in Brechin Church yard.

Regards

Hello,

Your James Wilkie appears on the "Black Sheep" index - under the heading of Railwaymen involved in accidents etc. - http://www.blacksheepindex.co.uk/MINRAILS-Z.pdf

There is no more information in the index - if you want the report, I believe they cost £8, and there's no guarantee of how much information is in it!

Hope you find out more about him.
Best wishes,

Found the answer !
I have GRO Death Reg. for an Isabella (Leighton) Wilkie who died in Brechin aged 72 in 1886, widow of James Wilkie (Railway Porter) ... she had no more children after William in March, 1858. I have them in the 1851 Census but then James was a Linen Weaver aged 33 [it looks like] ...  born in St Helena. They married in 1840 in Brechin. I also have Isabella in 1881 Census living in Tillicoultry with her daughter Jane born 1852, married to an Alexander Stewart + 4 children aged 2 (twins) 4 and 6.
I will personal message you to exchange e-mail addresses so I can send you what I have on them and their children by e-mail attachment.
