Hello Peter.
My G.Grandfather James Houlihan was born 18th July 1855 at
4 Denton Chare, St John. Newcastle upon tyne. This information is from his birth certificate. His father, Michael Houlihan was a journeyman blacksmith from Ireland.
Initially, I thought the the "chare" part of the address was wrong which made me start checking, and thats when I came across your post on Rootsweb.
I have looked at the 1861 census and my Houlihan family were not living there at that time although other families were.
I don't think there is any connecton with your family although one never knows.
Kind regards.
Lyn

Hi Lyn
Thanks for the info, nothing there to link the families.  Are there any other names on the certificate eg. Mothers maiden name, witness names.  Robert Crothers wife was born in Ireland, possibly maiden name of King.  Robert was born in South Carolina to British parents but seemed to go from there to Ireland as their first child was born there.

I paid a recent visit to Newcastle.  There are several 'Chares' in Newcastle, they are narrow alleys.  Denton Chare is a back alley leading from the Central Station thro to St Nicholas' Cathedral, probably once a bustling alley.  Nowadays it is just a rather scruffy alley with a few skip bins around and no doors, just the backs of buildings.

regards
Peter

Hi - were you aware Robert was formerly operating from Nelson Street, Newcastle? http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/issues/21093/pages/1320 (halfway down second column).

This London Gazette entry from 1850 relating to Robert might also be of interest: http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/issues/21093/pages/1319 (two-thirds of the way down second column)

Regards
Rob

Hi Rob

Thanks for that, Yes I had a previous Directory entry for Robert in Nelson St, Newcastle but I had no knowledge of his insolvency (but it doesn't surprise me!)  I will read this thoroughly but at first sight it appears that he was made insolvent at his own request.  Do you think that would be to get rid of his debts?  He was certainly operating as bookseller/newsagent throughout the 1850's and early 1860's until his death in 1862.  He appeared to prosper a little later on.

I have not come across these webpages before so I will have a good look.

Thanks again for the info

regards
Peter

I have attached an image showing the Enumerator's notes when he made the 1851 Census for Back
Row, Westgate Street (part), Collingwood Street (south side), St Nicholas Square (west corner) and Denton Chare.

The Ward was St. John's.

Central Station opened in 1850 and the Census was taken on the Night of Sunday 30 March 1851.

I have also created and attached an image of part of the Thomas Oliver 1830 map of Newcastle upon Tyne, overlayed onto a Google Earth image from 2012.

Back Row does still exist, but isn't called that now... it's just the bottom end of Westgate Road.

It's also worth noting that Postern is now underneath the Station Carpark.

Also it is Baileygate that is under the railway lines, NOT Back Row.

Denton Chare is in exactly the same place as it was in 1850, just to the south of, and parallel to, Collingwood Street.

St. Nicholas Street was straightened so that it headed straight past the Castle Keep heading for the High Level Bridge.

Previously St. Nicholas Street had split at it's southern end into The Side and Queen Street.

Queen Street  went south towards the Long Stairs which led down to The Close.

"Trivia Note.

The western end of Denton Chare starts close to a building on Westgate Rd, called Bolbec Hall, which houses the Northumberland & Durham Family History Scociety. The eastern end of Denton Chare presents you close to the front doors of St Nicholas's Cathedral."

Just an aside to say that the Northumberland and Durham Family History Society has now moved into Percy Street.
