Hi Peter
As far as I can tell it was in the parish of St Nicholas. If this is the right place then theres a photograph of it as it is today.  http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1018327

There appears to be several place in the centre of Newcastle that end with the name Chare.

See this site.

http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=43337

As Chare is defined as "a narrow street" explains why there ae so many.

You can see Denton Chare on the 1980-1994 map at http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm put the post code NE11RE in "Search". It runs between St. Nicholas Street and Westgate Road.

  Trivia Note.

The western end of Denton Chare starts close to a building on Westgate Rd, called Bolbec Hall, which houses the Northumberland & Durham Family History Scociety. The eastern end of Denton Chare presents you close to the front doors of St Nicholas's Cathedral.

One end steeped in history and the other collecting history  ;D

Many thanks, I have strolled down Denton Chare a few years ago when I was in Newcastle and it is much different to what I imagine it was 150 years ago when my GGGGrandfather and GGGrandfather had a bookshop/newsagents at No 4.  There were no building fronts at all in Denton Chare when I was there and it was full of skip bins.  Denton Chare is a handy thoroughfare running from Central Station through to St Nicholas' church having been a member of NDFHS I know of Bolbec Hall but I have never been in it.

Hi Peter.
I read you post re No 4 DENTON CHARE, in Newcastle on Tyne.

My great grandfather was born at 4 Denton Chare. St John, Newcastle on Tyne in July 1855 and the family surname was Houlihan.

Hope this helps.
Regards
Lyn

Hi Lyn

That is very interesting.  I have my GGGGrandfather Robert Crothers listed in Wards Directory 1850 as a bookseller in Denton Chare, then as newsagent in Denton Chare in Wards Directory 1851, then Roberts son Isaac Crowther (my GGGrandfather) as newsagent in Denton Chare in Wards Directory 1853, then Isaac as newsagent at 4 Denton Chare in Wards Directory 1855, and finally Isaac as Grocer & c and newsagent at 4 Denton Chare in Wards Directory 1859-60.  I've always assumed Robert and Isaac were at 4 Denton Chare throughout this period of 1850 to 1860.  Maybe they were at another house in Denton Chare up to 1855 but they are definitely listed as being at No 4 in 1855.  I don't know exactly when the 1855 Wards Directory would be printed or even when the information would be collected and compiled but I assume it would be before July 1855.  Does that mean that more than one family lived at No 4 or could your Houlihan ancestor have been related to my Crowthers/Crothers?  I have never heard of a Houlihan before but nothing would surprise me about this family.  Robert had very complicated relationships having children with his wife Elizabeth who died in 1848 and also with his 'mistress' Mary ? who died 1858 at 4 Denton Chare.  I wonder if Mary's surname was Houlihan?  I would be very interested if you could provide more information relating to your GGrandfather.

regards
Peter
