Braintree - Essex

Hi all,

I'm hoping to do a bit of 'pay-forward' after receiving a letter from a lady
whose information was of help to 'stovepipe'.( recent RootsChat posting )

The lady, who is not on the Internet, has given me the following known
information on a distant relative on her husbands side of her tree.

"Thomas NEWMAN sailed on the military ship 'Regent' to India.
He embarked on the 4th February 1816.
His occupation is given as labourer, from Braintree, Essex, age 19.(cby 1797 ? )
He married in India in 1818 ( Anne HEWITT )."

I realise that this is obviously a long shot for any results given the above
scarcity of information !.

I am assuming that Thomas had 'joined up' - possibly the Army ?

Could some-one please look up for any Thomas Newman baptisms around the 1797
period in Braintree Essex, give or take a couple of years ( just in case he
'fibbed' about his age when joining up !! ).

Would any-one have further information as regards to the 'Regent' ?

Thanks in advance for what-ever information regarding any of the above that
can be supplied.

Mick Newman ( not related to Thomas )
