Not my family but......
« on: Sunday 08 March 09 15:03 GMT (UK) »
My first message so am not sure which board to use.    :-[ :-[
My father worked as a thatcher on the Sidmouth Estate, Upottery, Devon and when he died I "inherited" a framed photo of the lord of the Manor.   To cut a long story short, I removed the picture from the wormeaten frame and found another photograph stuck to the back of the lord.
Although there are names of the couple (wedding photo) I cannot quite decipher them but I am sure they are something to do with Lord Sidmouth.  It looks like an Edwardian photo and I would be interested if there was any place I could contact that may help identify the couple.

Thanks :) :)

Hi Battyb

Welcome to Rootschat

Why not post it here (and the names of the couple too) or on the photograph restoration and dating board - Rootschatters love a challenge and some who frequent the "photo" board are very good at dating photographs http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,298.0.html

Sounds like a good idea but at the moment my scanner is kaput so this avenue will have to be put on hold.

Thanks though :)

The surname of the Viscount Sidmouths was Addington - does that look like a name on the back?

Yes that was the family name (we actually lived in a cottage at Upottery years ago called Addington Cotts) and as far as I can deciper the names are : C or G Addington (bride) and Mr I Mount (groom).
He is dressed in a white uniform with an armband on his left arm (no hat) and has a sword at his side.
The photo is not taken outside a church, more like the grounds of a largish garden.

Betty - if he was in a white uniform might it have been taken abroad? Is it a military-type uniform? Some overseas units had white/light dress uniforms. I know we had a similar-sounding piccie where the celebration photo had been taken at Government House (or something similar) in India.

Hi Stoney
Yes the white suit does look like a uniform of some sort and also the background does look a bit colonial.
Now I have a new scanner and can understand what to do I can post the photo - may take me a bit of time as I haven't done it before !! :-[ :-[
